New Rumor Claims Apple Plans to Move iPad Mini, Air to OLED Displays

The Cupertino giant plans to apply OLED to future iPad Mini models by 2026.

Apple's existing iPad mini models still use LED displays which is quite behind other tablets of this generation. However, a new report suggests that the Cupertino giant will likely release OLED panels for 2026 iPad Mini variants.

With Samsung Display rapidly advancing its OLED technology for IT applications, it will take only a few years before we get to see this on Apple's tablets.

Following the mass production of OLED panels for the iPad Pro earlier this year, the company is now developing panels for the iPad Mini.

According to industry sources, Samsung Display started creating samples for Apple's new OLED tablet, the iPad Mini, last month.

Traditionally, Apple has used LCD panels for its iPad series. However, this year marked a significant shift as OLED panels were introduced for the first time in select models.

Specifically, the iPad Pro models (11 inches and 12.9 inches) received OLED panels, which Samsung Display and LG Display have been mass-producing since the first quarter of this year.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to incorporate OLED technology into its iPad Mini and Air models, anticipated for release in 2026, ZDNET Korea writes in its latest report.

Development of OLED Panels for iPad Mini

In response to Apple's plans, Samsung Display commenced the development of 8-inch OLED panel samples for the iPad Mini last month. A limited number of domestic partners are collaborating with Samsung Display on this advanced development.

The mass production of these panels is expected to take place at Samsung's Cheonan A2 line, which primarily produces 5.5-generation rigid OLED panels. The industry estimates that mass production could begin as early as the second half of 2025.

Significance of OLED Technology for IT

Although still in the early stages, this development project highlights Samsung Display's capabilities in OLED technology for IT applications, as demonstrated by the iPad Pro model.

An industry insider revealed, "Samsung Display began developing samples for the OLED iPad Mini last month at Apple's request.

After developing initial samples in the first half of this year, we will move to the development stage for mass production within the year." This project serves as a crucial bridgehead for expanding Samsung Display's OLED business within the IT sector.

Samsung Display aims to supply 4 to 5 million panels for the 11-inch OLED iPad Pro model this year. While the cost of OLED panels for IT is significantly higher (three to four times) than those for smartphones, the shipment volume remains smaller compared to other industries. The estimated shipment for OLED iPad Mini panels is around 10 million units.

Securing this quantity in advance would enable Samsung Display to boost its OLED production for the IT market significantly.

MacRumors reports that ET News believes what ZDNET wrote, pointing out that the OLED panels will not be available only for iPad Mini. It is expected to be available on 13-inch iPad Air in 2027.
