Gemini, the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by Google, is now integrated into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and other products in the tech giant's Google Workspace suite of tools.
If you use Gmail for Workspace, you probably know that a Gemini button has been available for a while now. By clicking this 'Help me write' button, users can enter any prompt to improve their emails or help start a first draft.
How the Gemini Button Works in Gmail for Workspace
Users can type prompts such as 'Ask my friends about watching a movie' or 'Remind my secretary about a meeting.' You can also ask it to rewrite your email in a particular tone or even create email summaries.
To make a summary of a document, simply highlight your chosen text, click the Gemini button, and select the Summarize option. Users can also use the Gemini AI button to expand or shorten what they have already written.
Gemini AI Integration in Gmail Android App
Android Authority reports today that Google is working on adding the same feature to the Gmail Android app.
Android Authority often conducts APK teardowns, where they examine strings of code within an app to find features that could be rolled out to the public soon.
In a recent teardown, the tech news outlet found references to a Gemini button coming to the Gmail Android app. The new button, which looks like a four-point star (not to be confused with the star button for marking favorites), can be accessed next to the archive button.

How the Button Works
Upon clicking this button, a new sliding page will pop up asking users, 'How can I help you today?' From there, users can type in any command, such as summarizing the currently open email and drafting an appropriate reply.
Previously, only a 'summarize this email' button was available for the Gmail Android app. Now, you can ask Google's Gemini AI assistant for email-related and even non-email tasks.
Additionally, Android Authority found that this Gemini integration in the Gmail app can access and reference context from some previous emails. However, when asked to view unread emails, the chat refused, indicating that it is not yet as deeply integrated as the web version.
It is important to note that this new feature has been found in the app's work-in-progress code, which means many more changes could still be added or removed during development.
