Uber Driver Fatally Shot

Authorities have reported a tragic incident where an Uber driver was fatally shot by a man who believed they were both targeted in a scam. The accused, 81-year-old William Brock, has been indicted on charges including murder, kidnapping, and felonious assault by a Clark County grand jury.

Despite his plea of not guilty, Brock could face a life sentence if convicted of murder. Associated Press reported that the shooting took place on March 25 at Brock's residence in South Charleston, prompting a response from county sheriff's officers after Brock dialed 911, claiming self-defense against a robbery attempt.

Brock had been targeted by scam calls from an individual posing as a local court officer. These calls escalated to threats and extortion demands. The victim, Loletha Hall, 61, worked as an Uber driver and was instructed to pick up a package from Brock's residence. Investigators believe this request may have originated from the same scam caller or an associate.

Hall was unaware of the calls made to Brock. Upon her arrival at the residence and exiting her vehicle, Brock brandished a firearm, demanding information about the source of the threatening calls. Additionally, he confiscated Hall's cell phone and prevented her from leaving the scene.

When Hall attempted to flee, Brock fired a single shot at her, followed by two more shots as they engaged in conversation. During the altercation, Brock sustained a minor head injury, prompting him to contact 911 shortly after firing the third shot.

Despite being transported to a hospital, Hall succumbed to her injuries. Initially charged with murder, Brock's upcoming court appearance is set for Monday, as authorities determined that Hall posed no immediate threat at the time of the shooting.

Uber's Response, Aftermath

Investigations into the original scam calls targeting Brock and Hall are ongoing, with authorities yet to ascertain if they originated from the same individual.

Uber expressed its condolences on the tragic incident, emphasizing its unwavering support for Loletha's family during this difficult time. BIN reported that the statement also affirmed Uber's collaboration with law enforcement authorities and reiterated its dedication to assisting in the investigation.

Following extensive investigation, authorities determined that Hall had no association with the caller and did not present any threat to Brock. Lieutenant Kristopher Shultz of the Clark County Sheriff's Office revealed that Brock's mention of the call stemmed from a scam.

Initially, the caller purported to be from the court system, alleging that one of Brock's family members was incarcerated and necessitated a significant bond payment.

According to Shultz, the calls escalated from the impersonation of a court officer to scenarios involving alleged hostages and ransom demands.
