A new alternative to Dolby Atmos is here. It is the DTS:X, known for offering spatial audio, which will soon arrive on Disney+ to bring the sound to upcoming movies and series on the platform.
This is the first time that DTS:X is getting streaming platform support, with the company's technology centering on improving IMAX Enhanced content and more for an immersive experience.
The company long promised this integration to Disney+, but despite earlier claims, it was not able to add it last year and is only coming this year.
DTS:X Spatial Audio Coming to Disney+ Titles
DTS:X is coming to streaming, and the first platform to offer its support is Disney+. The first title to bring this new audio experience will be Queen Rock Montreal, Digital Trends reported.
The DTS:X support on Disney+ will roll out starting April 15, and the Queen Rock Montreal film will drop on the platform come May 15. Alongside the new DTS:X spatial audio experience, this film is also an IMAX Enhanced title, which means that there are scenes that can be viewed with a 1:90:1 ratio that may eliminate the black bars seen on displays that use a 16:9 ratio.
Other content streamed on Disney+ and offered on IMAX Enhanced are available for this, including Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, and more.
IMAX Enhanced Content to Get DTS:X
IMAX Enhanced is known for using DTS:X's audio component to deliver spatial audio, best described as 3D, immersive sound to certain media.
Both are owned by Xperi, and IMAX Enhanced content uses this new spatial audio technology, which offers various improvements compared to Dolby Atmos.
However, there are still challenges with this, as while many soundbars or home theater systems already support DTS:X, other considerations also need a TV that can decode or pass through it.
Spatial Audio, Dolby Atmos, and MORE
The massive integration of spatial audio into many experiences worldwide centers on improving the sound output of certain content, focusing on three-dimensional audio on various platforms.
Apple and Apple Music are known for their massive fondness of Spatial Audio, best known for using Dolby Atmos' technology to bring this newfound immersive tech to sounds.
That being said, the most popular and frankly, solo spatial audio brand known to the world is Dolby Atmos, with massive partnerships with LG, Apple, Mercedes Benz, and more.
The tech enhances the audio more than the regular, stereo-based outputs, giving the sound more depth and offering an immersive experience that takes users right to the action or feel of the music.
However, a new player in town has been trying to give the world a more expanded experience with spatial audio, and that is DTS: X. IMAX Enhanced is known for using DTS:X's audio component to deliver the experience, fully utilizing it with the tech's integration among platforms, one of which Disney+ is the first to offer support over Dolby Atmos.
