Discord Ads are Coming, But You Can Opt Out of ‘Sponsored Quests’

Starting this week, Discord users may now see ads from streams.

After a long time of preventing ads, Discord's new plan for boosting its platform is to bring targeted ads to users' streams to the instant messaging app.

The Discord ads are also known as 'Sponsored Quests,' the company said that it will start rolling out to users' streams this week, as confirmed by a Discord executive.

Streamer or content creator revenue is not the platform's main focus, but it still offers in-game rewards for every time friends or mutuals watch a game they stream.

Discord Ads are Coming, 'Sponsored Quests' Rolling Out

Following last month's announcement from Discord that it will bring ads to the platform, the company now shared with Ars Technica that ads are coming to the instant messaging platform. This is through the new service known as 'Sponsored Quests,' which will bring ads to the bottom left corner of a user's game or other type of content streaming.

Users who share stream on the platform will receive in-game rewards for inviting friends and mutuals from the app to watch.

The company's main goal is to showcase more games to its users, offering a form of marketing through the instant messaging app.

You May Opt-Out of Discord Ads

However, for those who are not that keen on Discord's new ads, despite not being a disruptive experience unlike that of other social media platforms, users may still opt out of this through their settings.

These new ads from Discord are targeted and will depend on their age, geographic data, and gameplay preferences, centering on their data and activity.

Discord and its Platform

Discord is best known for offering a platform that expands more of a user's connection and mainly saw its popularity rise in the gaming community.

Recently, the platform decided to revamp the experience on mobile devices, including both Android and iOS, one that will make it more intuitive for the touchscreen smartphone experience, particularly as it was made to replicate the desktop experience.

For the desktop platform, the company will also release a fall update centered on massive changes for the platform, best known for its 150 million monthly active users.

Some of the features enhanced by Discord include the new Shop, Remix's meme-ification of media, and Nitro, which offers significant new features and experiences that expand more of the subscription-based tier.

With Discord's last update about its plans to change its business model to bring ads, many have feared that it would be the end of an era, but the company made sure to make it an opt-in experience.

Users who stream on the app will have a chance to earn from the ads, particularly with the in-game rewards they receive from the streams on Sponsored Quests.
