Facebook Soon to Have Fully AI-Powered Video Recommendation Algorithm, Meta Confirms

A massive AI model for Facebook.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will soon be the judge for Facebook users' video feeds as announced by its head Tom Alison. As per reports, one of Meta's significant AI investments is creating an AI system that powers Facebook's video recommendation engine and all its platforms.

Whilst speaking at Morgan Stanley's Technology and Media Telecom Conference, Tom Alison said that these AI ambitions are purportedly a part of Meta's "technology roadmap" for the next two years. These plans will reportedly see an AI recommendation model that would fuel both the company's longer, traditional movies and its TikTok-like Reels short video service.

Until now, Meta has often used different models for each product, such as reels, groups, and the primary Facebook feed. However, Alison claims that after testing a new AI model just on Facebook reels last year, the videos saw an eight to ten percent boost in views, demonstrating how much more effectively the massive AI model manages data.

The Meta executive is trying to scale the new AI model architecture as a video recommendation engine that can handle more data so it can learn more now that it is in its third phase. According to Alison, users will be able to watch a reel that piques their interest and then return to their news feed, where the AI engine will suggest content that is similar to what they just saw implying that a more responsive and flawless experience may be produced by the AI engine.

GenAI-Driven Facebook

One of the generative AI projects that Meta is thinking about is adding more advanced chat features to its main feed. This would allow someone to simply click a button and ask Meta AI to provide more information about what they're seeing with Taylor Swift at the moment after they see a suggested post about her.

Additionally, Meta is experimenting with integrating its AI chat feature into Facebook groups. This means that someone in a group on Facebook baking may ask a question about desserts and receive a response from a virtual assistant.

AI Hardware Demand

As the goal is to create a massive artificial intelligence model, Alison notes that this will involve significant hardware investments, including data center reconfiguration. This is in line with remarks made by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and OpenAI's Sam Altman after their on-stage conversation at Intel's Foundry Event in San Jose, California, where they both predicted an increase in the demand for more and faster AI chips in the years to come.

The business Meta has been investing billions of dollars in Nvidia graphics processing units, or GPUs, as part of its grand venture into artificial intelligence. These days, AI researchers primarily utilize them to train the kinds of massive language models that underpin other generative AI models including OpenAI's well-known ChatGPT chatbot.
