The next iteration of Microsoft's computers will be "AI PCs" and new rumors suggest a nearing revelation from the company will bring the next-gen Surface Pro and Laptop devices with this new capability. Two computers are slated for a reported launch later this month, with an OLED Surface Pro 10 and a Surface Laptop 6 which will feature massive onboard AI capabilities.
What is even more exciting is the known collaboration of Microsoft and OpenAI, with these devices possibly being GPT-powered and offering more of the large language model.
Microsoft Surface Pro 10, AI PCs Coming This Month
Windows Central reported that Microsoft is getting ready to deliver their first AI PCs to the world, and this would be in the form of an OLED Surface Pro 10 and a Surface Laptop 6. These releases would feature onboard AI, meaning that despite being offline, the machine learning tech would be available to access, rumored to be prepping for its release later this month.
These new computers would go beyond hardware refresh and subtle design changes like previous Surface computers before it, one that would have matched the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro in terms of performance.
Microsoft's take on AI PCs would have the Surface computers supporting Windows 11's upcoming AI features including the on-device Copilot, live captions and translations, frame rate smoothing, game upscaling, Windows Studio Effects upgrades, and a new program called AI Explorer.
Onboard AI for Microsoft's Upcoming Computers
What will make this onboard AI possible for Microsoft's upcoming Surface computers and tablets are the new chips that boast neural processing units (NPUs). This includes the Intel Core Ultra and the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, both known for their focus on AI, upgrading the NPUs on the chipsets to handle massive machine learning processes.
Microsoft's Surface and AI
Microsoft's Surface computers and tablets retain their rank in the technology world but are not exactly breaking barriers or getting hyped like its rivals from Apple, ASUS, Lenovo, and more. Moreover, there has been a slow development to the Surface lineup, with Microsoft not bringing regular release updates as seen on other brands, and industry talks find no evidence of future releases.
That being said, there are still plans to improve more of the Surface computers and tablets in the future, especially with Microsoft's newfound focus, AI, best known for its partnership with OpenAI. Both are still mutually benefitting from each's work on improving the AI landscape, with Microsoft getting significant improvements on its proprietary tech thanks to OpenAI's LLM.
The world of AI PCs significantly boomed since many companies introduced it at various events, including the likes of Intel, Lenovo, Qualcomm, and more. In Microsoft's case, the next-gen Surface computers like the OLED Surface Pro 10 and the Laptop 6 are transforming into AI PCs, featuring onboard capabilities that deliver the native experience, rumored for its release this month.
