Microsoft Shuts Down Windows 11's Android Apps from Amazon, No More WSA?

Android apps from the Amazon App Store on Windows 11 will no longer work soon.

The famed feature of Microsoft's Windows 11 to install and use Android apps directly is shutting down shortly, with the company now notifying users about this change. This centers on the Android apps that were distributed via the Amazon App Store, citing that the company is removing the iconic Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) which launched two years ago.

For these past two years, Windows PC users have been delighted with the access to Android apps directly on the computer, and this changes significant things in their current setup.

Microsoft Shuts Down Windows 11 Android Apps from Amazon

Microsoft's latest notice on its website confirmed the D-day for its Windows Subsystem for Android program, and come March 5, 2025, the service will shut down and no longer be supported by the computer platform. This also means that all apps that are dependent on the Amazon App Store for their downloads, installation, purchases, updates, and more will also be inaccessible soon.

This shutdown will take effect next year, meaning that from this moment until its end of support date, users may still be able to enjoy the applications and games.

Windows 11 users would also no longer be able to search and download the Amazon App Store from the Microsoft Store starting Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

No More Windows Subsystem for Android Soon

The monumental decision of Microsoft to shut down the WSA program for the Windows platform is one significant event, as its growing fame because of this newfound Android access was one of the sought-after features available. In its rival's, Apple, computer, there is still a wide margin between iOS apps and macOS apps, as not all are interoperable.

Microsoft Windows and Android Apps

After initial tests and a 2021 announcement, Microsoft finally brought the Windows 11 platform a chance to access Android apps straight to the computer, calling it the Windows Subsystem for Android. Upon its launch, Microsoft brought the Android 13 operating system to its PCs, with various apps and smartphone features available to access here for users.

Last year, Microsoft announced a massive expansion for the WSA program, centering on improvements for the service, bringing in more Android apps via the Amazon App Store, and more. The company also promised better access and expansion for developers who will bring their Android apps to the Windows 11 platform via Amazon, one that looks to improve the overall experience.

It has been a delight for Windows 11 users to get Android's famous apps and games available on the computer platform, and many use this feature to this day. Microsoft's recent change of heart will give users around a year to experience more of Android on Windows 11, but they will no longer be able to search and access these apps come March 5 of next year.
