The renowned smartphone chip developer, Qualcomm, is now reportedly asking for help to develop its take on the 2nm chip process, a smaller chipset to bring significant power to mobile devices. This includes companies like Samsung and TSMC which Qualcomm already asked, with the South Korean tech giant already agreeing to help create the prototype unit it needs.
Moreover, it is regarded that this new 2nm chip process would be the next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series, to power Android smartphones.
Samsung to Help Qualcomm Develop 2nm Chips?
Korea's EtNews recently reported that Qualcomm is tapping into Samsung and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to help it develop 2nm chips for its future processors. Currently, it is TSMC that achieved a significant milestone in creating a working 3nm chip process, the smallest there is in the market, now powering iPhones and Macs.
The report also said that Samsung already decided to help Qualcomm by creating a prototype AP unit that is already in the 2nm process.
It is unknown yet if TSMC already agreed to create the AP unit prototype, but once Qualcomm gets its hands on both of these, it would have the chance to choose between the processors from either company. The report further said that the process may take from six months to a year for TSMC.
Qualcomm Asked Samsung, and TSMC for Help
Samsung's development of these next-generation chips was already laid out by the South Korean company, stating that its 2nm process would significantly improve power efficiency and performance soon. Moreover, as regarded by Samsung before, there is already a target mass production date for the 2nm chips and it is coming by next year for the world to see.
Qualcomm's Chip Development and SoCs
The Snapdragon 8 series from Qualcomm is one of the best smartphone chips now, renowned for what it has to offer the world in brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and more flagship devices. Moreover, it gained significant remarks when it beat Apple's famed SoC for the iPhone, particularly with the A16 Bionic chips in its running score, despite being released almost two years ago.
Its massive development and the world's smartphone brands' use of the Snapdragon chipsets only highlight the dominance of the multinational tech company from San Diego, California. Even Samsung who is known for developing its own chips got the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the latest S24 series, powering its AI features and onboard technology.
Now, Qualcomm is the one asking for help to deliver its next-gen processors to the world, going for the tiny 2nm process to bring the renowned computing power for smartphones. Samsung has reportedly decided that it will give Qualcomm the 2nm AP unit prototype that would help the San Diego company move forward, with TSMC remaining unknown if it would extend a helping hand.
