Disney+ Now Joins Netflix in Restricting Subscribers Account Sharing

Disney+ joins Netflix in limiting account sharing.

Disney+ subscribers in the United States will soon see changes to their account-sharing practices as the streaming service follows in Netflix's footsteps to reduce unauthorized sharing. This move is intended to ensure fairness and enforce the terms of service for all users (via Phone Arena).

Beginning with new customers, Disney+ has updated its terms of service to include restrictions on sharing accounts outside of one's household, The Verge reports.

Recent Changes From Disney+

This update, which went into effect on January 25th for new subscribers, will be enforced for existing subscribers starting March 14th. Subscribers are being notified of the changes via email notifications.

In the email sent to subscribers, Disney+ explains that they are "adding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household" and outlines how they may assess compliance with these new restrictions.

While the streaming giant mentions analyzing account usage for compliance, specifics on enforcement methods remain undisclosed.

Similar Trends in the Streaming Industry

This move by Disney+ closely mirrors actions taken by Netflix, which previously implemented similar measures to restrict password sharing among its subscribers.

With Disney+ following suit, it signifies a broader trend among streaming services to crack down on account-sharing practices that undermine revenue streams.

However, unlike Netflix, which rolled out changes earlier and more widely, Disney+ took longer to implement these restrictions. Nevertheless, the wait is over, and subscribers can expect to see these changes taking effect soon.

GamesRadar tells us that the decision includes popular shows like The Burning Girls, One Night, The Killing Kind, The Serial Killer's Wife, and The Doll Factory. This move aligns with Paramount Plus' strategic shift towards prioritizing Hollywood franchises and content with broader global appeal.

Despite the removal of these series, Paramount Plus remains a significant player in the streaming landscape, offering a diverse array of content to its subscribers. The platform's focus on delivering high-quality entertainment experiences remains unwavering, even as it adjusts its content offerings.
