Google Pixel users are once again experiencing a frustrating storage bug, which prevents them from accessing internal storage on their devices after updating to the January 2024 Google Play System update.
This déjà vu situation, as Android Authority reports, echoes a similar issue that occurred in October, raising concerns among users who believed the problem had been resolved.
Reports from across the Pixel community paint a consistent picture:
- Internal storage fails to mount.
- The camera crashes.
- The Files app shows no files.
- Screenshots vanish into the digital void.
A concerned Reddit user succinctly described the symptoms, shedding light on the widespread dissatisfaction among Pixel 8, Pixel 7, Pixel 6, Pixel 5, and Pixel Fold users.
Google Acknowledges Recurring Pixel Issue
This recurrence is particularly vexing as Google had already addressed a storage bug in October, affecting Pixel devices running Android 14, primarily impacting users with multiple profiles. The November patch seemed to have laid the issue to rest, only for the January Play System update to resurrect it.
According to a statement from Google to 9to5Google, the tech giant is "aware of this issue and is looking into it." However, users are left in the dark about when a fix will roll out or if Google will consider pulling the troublesome January update, which, as of now, has not reached a significant portion of users.

A Possible Quick Fix
For those who have not added the January 2024 Google Play System update, it might be better to hold off until Google announces the next steps.
However, if you have already taken the plunge and grappled with the storage problem, there is a potential workaround. Deactivating multiple profiles on your Pixel phone might offer a temporary solution until a more permanent fix is in place.
Most Pixel users are still on the November 2023 release, which could act as a safeguard to limit the spread of the issue. 9to5Google emphasizes the importance of checking the Play System update version in the Settings app under Security & privacy > System & updates.
Comparisons are drawn to the previous storage issue in October, with the current problem seemingly tied to having the Google Play system update installed.
Last year, a system update was the remedy, and Google has yet to clarify whether a similar solution will be employed. 9tO5Google tells us that if your device remains functional without falling into a "Pixel is starting" boot loop, there might be hope for data recovery with an over-the-air update.
