Android Authority suggests that Google Maps' driving mode will be integrated into Google assistant by February 2024. A move described as a way for Google to push consumers to Assistant more.
This rumored change was first reportedly discovered by 9to5Google via an APK teardown that saw two strange strings in version 14.52 of the Google app, according to the source, these strings are related to the Driving Mode in Google Maps for Android.
The first string mentions that an unidentified "view" will be phased out in February 2024, while "To call, message, or play media while navigating, tap the mic to use Assistant," reads the second string.
These codes are suggested to be pertaining to the surviving "Driving Mode" in Google Maps for Android, hinting at its possible discontinuation.
Users may then be prompted in the future to just use Google's assistant and direct the AI "Hey Google, launch driving mode," to launch the Google Maps navigation mode.
Android Authority suggests in its report that in principle, audio-only interactions are safer, yet this still appears to be a step down in terms of functionality.
An APK teardown, as per 9to5Google, is the decompilation of an application's files or APKs within its latest version, numerous lines of codes are then accessible after decompiling these files that may or may not hint to possible future features.
This rumored update follows just after a year Google announced the discontinuation of the Assistant Driving Mode, which gave a "Dashboard" homescreen. This left another optimized UI in Google Maps for Android, popularly known as "Driving Mode."
Audio-Centered Driving Mode
This possible audio-centered update proves to be in line with Google Map's recent upgrade, a reportedly new voice input method powered by Google Assistant as well.
The new interface appears reportedly in a card that occupies the majority of the screen. There are shortcuts for searching for restaurants, petrol stations, and other such categories, which appears to be a little repetitive.
The main advantage here is that voice search is significantly faster, and there is now visual feedback. Users are able to see a real-time representation of what they are saying, and identification will be considerably faster. 9to5Google's limited testing seemingly saw commands like "navigate to" significantly faster overall.
Google Maps' for Automakers
For some, this may be a minor change, but for automakers, Google maps and other Google applications may be the only option, as CNBC reports that the tech giant was investigated earlier this year over whether or not it illegally bundles its maps, app store, and voice assistant for automakers via Google Automotive Services.
In response to this, A Google spokesperson said that developers are allowed to utilize alternative mapping services in addition to Google Maps Platform, adding that many developers do.
According to the spokesperson, Google confronts intense competition in the connected vehicle industry, and automakers using Google's Android Automotive OS are not compelled to use its automotive services.
According to the Google spokesman, the firm always works with authorities and is happy to answer any concerns they may have about the business.
