There's a new Spider-Girl in town, and she's here to stay.
The Amazing Spider-Man's "Spider-Verse" event gave birth to a wild variety of spider-men and -women, but one of them really captured readers' imaginations. Marvel is calling her "the breakout character of 2014," and now she's getting her own ongoing series.
That's right, Spider-Gwen #1 is coming. Everyone knows that Peter Parker once had a girlfriend he was madly in love with named Gwen Stacy, but she was killed by the Green Goblin in a famous story arc from 1973. And unlike other comic book characters, she stayed dead.
Spider-Gwen isn't the story of her return. It's the story of a different Gwen Stacy from another earth, or an alternate universe if you like. This Gwen, unlike her regular Marvel universe counterpart, was bitten by the radioactive spider that turned Peter into Spider-Man. (The role reversal is completed by Peter's death in her universe, although under very different circumstances.)
After her introduction in "Spider-Verse," this all-new, all-different Gwen Stacy will be back in February 2015, starring in her own series. Here's how Marvel describes issue #1:
She's Gwen Stacy. She's smart, tough, and charming. She drums in a punk rock band and goes to high school just like you. Only she can lift a car and has spider powers! Just don't tell her father, NYPD Police Chief George Stacy! But you knew all that already! What you don't know is Gwen is back home following the events of Spider-Verse and you won't believe what she's got waiting for her!
Spider-Gwen #1 goes on sale February 25. It's being written by Jason Latour with art by Robbi Rodriguez. Variant covers will be available from Adam Hughes, Skottie Young and Kris Anka. And here is your first look. Click on each image for a high-res version.
