There's a new spider-powered superhero on the block, and she's a familiar face for Spider-Man fans. Gwen Stacy, one-time love interest of Peter Parker himself and recently seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, will be getting spider powers all her own in a new ongoing comic book series.
Fans have already gotten a glimpse of Spider-Gwen as part of the current "Spider-Verse" storyline in Edge of Spider-Verse. Marvel says the fan reception and financial success of her first appearance paved the way for the alternate universe character to get her own series where she is the one, true web-slinger. The series will be helmed by writer Jason Latour (Edge of Spider-Verse, Wolverine and the X-Men), artist Robbi Rodriguez (Edge of Spider-Verse, All-New X-Men), and colorist Rico Renzi. Marvel Senior Editor Nick Lowe says it's rare a character gets the amount of support Spider-Gwen has.
"From the sell-out of Gwen's first appearance to the groundswell on Twitter we're excited to bring more Spider-Gwen into the world with the creators who started it all!" Lowe says in a press release.
In true Spider-Man fashion, the rebellious, drum-playing Gwen will have to deal with her own set of personal problems as she grapples with the villains of New York. Her dad is a Captain in the New York Police Department convinced the costumed Spider-Gwen is a menace to the city. Expect some new takes on classic Marvel characters and villains to also make an appearance.
"We'll absolutely see an ‘evil' Matt Murdock (a.k.a. Daredevil), and the Kingpin. I'm a huge old school Daredevil fan, so I get this real sick thrill out of twisting him around and making him the villain," Latour says to Marvel.com. "There's also a new twist a character you'd immediately identify as a villain, who we're re-casting as a more complex threat to Gwen and Captain Stacy-a character coming at her from within the system..."
If an "evil" Matt Murdock wasn't tantalizing enough, who could the mysterious character be that Latour is teasing? Fans will likely have to continue speculating until the comic's release, but there is no doubt Gwen looks like she knows how to web-sling in style. Her hooded costume is much different from those of the other Spider-heroes populating the Marvel multi-verse and it fits perfectly with her character.
Spider-Gwen #1 will hit comic store shelves in February 2015.
