A big criticism of pop music has always been that it all sounds the same. Unfortunately for all you pop fans out there, the naysayers kind of have a point.
Exhibit A: A new super-cut created by YouTube user Cutting Room features nearly 60 songs released from 2006 to today that include the phrase "Whoa oh oh" in their lyrics. Now those three words are fun to say, especially in succession, so I get the appeal, arbiters of pop music. However, your lack of creativity does sadden me.
This video kind of proves that if you want to have a hit on your hands, you might want to consider putting those lyrics in. Some of the biggest songs of the millennium so far have "Whos oh oh" in their lyrics, including Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)," Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and Coldplay's "Viva La Vida."
Speaking of Coldplay, the British band, along with Kesha and Rihanna, are especially fans of the phrase. They're all featured in two songs each in this super-cut. The lyric is also popular among American Idol alumni. Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips, Season 8 winner Kris Allen and Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta all appear in this super-cut as well.
At least the songs sound kind of different, right? Well, not quite. As I listened to the full video, the songs seemed to just kind of blend in to one another into an endless stream of "Whoa oh oh"'s after a while. I guess this is what all pop music sounds like to some people.
