Kia America has unveiled the all-electric EV3 and EV4 concept models at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show, showcasing the automaker's cutting-edge electric platform technology and commitment to a leading color, material, and finish (CMF) strategy.
These concept models, Concept EV3 and Concept EV4, exemplify Kia's Opposites United design philosophy, offering a glimpse into potential future products.
Kia's New EV Concepts
Steven Center, COO & EVP at Kia America, emphasized the significance of showcasing these concepts in Los Angeles, a region synonymous with savvy electric vehicle (EV) consumers.
He noted: "The Concept EV3 and Concept EV4 are sharply styled, material-driven concepts that point to the expansion of the Kia EV lineup, and California is the barometer for successful EVs."
"That's why we came to Los Angeles and America's savviest EV consumers, to gauge reaction to two potential opportunities within the Kia lineup," he added.
Kia also unveiled a set of essential components of bioplastics sourced from biomass origins like vegetable oils, corn extract, sawdust, and sugarcane earlier this year.
Bio Polyurethane, an alternative to animal-based leather, was also introduced among these materials. The plan is to incorporate these eco-friendly materials into upcoming Kia models, including the Concept EV3 and Concept EV4.
Concept EV3
The Concept EV3 envisions an electric, compact crossover that combines the technology, practicality, and design of Kia's flagship EV, the EV9.
Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center, noted that the "Joy for Reason" influence in Concept EV3 is evident in the contrasting qualities of a robust body with a dynamic silhouette.
The exterior design features a unique silhouette with a forward-pushed windshield, a sloping roofline, and a disconnected C pillar, creating a floating roof effect.
The interior provides a sense of openness, aiming to enhance comfort with subtle mood lighting and a minimalist dashboard. The seats feature an ergonomic design using natural fiber structures for a lighter and more streamlined profile.
Materials incorporating 3D Knit technology contribute to a contemporary look, and the console table includes bio-plastic materials for practical solutions.
Concept EV4
According to Kia America, the Concept EV4 embodies the purity of the "Power to Progress" pillar of the Opposites United design philosophy. With a four-door format, it emphasizes potent and impactful lines, representing a new type of EV sedan. The exterior design features confident, geometric diagonal character lines, a low nose, and a long-tail silhouette.
The interior of the Concept EV4 is designed with a cocoon-like feel, featuring a sleek and expansive horizontal layout. Key features comprise an HVAC user interface with a storable control panel and pin-style air vents.
According to Kia, the incorporation of handwoven fabric stripes and the utilization of natural dyes and recycled cotton enhances the material composition of the interior.
