Samsung XR Headset is Coming by Late 2024, to Compete with Meta, Apple Vision Pro

2024 is set for a mixed-reality showdown, with Samsung joining in.

There have been several takes from Samsung that centered on VR headsets, but the company is now looking to tap into the XR market, a.k.a. the mixed reality, with reports centering on a late 2024 release. This will par the South Korean-made wearable against US companies, Meta with the Quest 3 and the Apple Vision Pro, with the latter, also releasing come next year.

Earlier this year via Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked, there was an announcement regarding a joint development of the wearable XR with Google and Qualcomm, with this soon debuting.

A South Korean news agency, JoongAng, reported that the plans for Samsung's upcoming mixed-reality headset will arrive by late 2024, with the publications stating that it will center on the second half of the year. This XR wearable headset is codenamed the "Infinite," and will soon offer the virtual and augmented reality experience for Galaxy users and more.

The report further claims that Samsung is looking to create as many as 30,000 units for its initial outing, but is unknown if this will center only on South Korea or on the global market.

Furthermore, Samsung Display will create the lens for it, centering on the OLEDoS display for the Infinite which is also the same one which Apple uses.

Competing with Meta and Apple Vision Pro

The current mixed-reality headset market already saw that of Meta's Quest 3, and this version, centers on a closed-lens display that has cameras to bring the feed from outside the headset with the feature known as Passthrough. It will also compete with Apple's Vision Pro, a wearable XR headset that is slated for the early part of 2024, also having no official release dates.

Samsung's XR Project and Gear VR

Back in February, the massive Galaxy Unpacked event by Samsung unveiled that it had partnered with Google and Qualcomm to develop a mixed-reality headset that would soon arrive for the world. It was said to tap into Google's Android for the system and device connectivity, and it will use Qualcomm's chip to power it, with the teaser not revealing its availability date.

So far, no other information has surfaced until the recent reports which claim new intel on what Samsung is planning to bring for all.

The last venture by Samsung towards wearable headsets was with the Gear VR, a device discontinued in 2017, with the South Korean company parting ways with the then Oculus, now known as Meta Quest.

Its Gear VR has always held a special place among Samsung owners as it gave them a slice of a new reality in the virtual space, powered by one of the most iconic companies in the industry, Oculus.

With Samsung's aspirations to deliver its latest take on these wearables, an XR project was born with Google and Qualcomm, soon releasing it to the world come the second half of 2024.
