Nintendo's Patent For Splitable Dual Screen Raises Switch 2 Speculations

An exciting patent resembling a familiar console.

Nintendo, according to Gamerant, has recently filed a patent for a dual-screen, detachable device similar to the 3DS.

The filed patent supports a device that may be divided into two halves. The two parts can connect wirelessly, allowing two gamers to play on the same device. When linked, the two parts function as a DS or 3DS.

The rumored Nintendo Switch 2 update shows the device also has a touchscreen on the exterior, allowing players to interact with the portable even while it is closed. Additionally, the device is seemingly handheld-only.

Gamerant further implied that if the patent does come to fruition, it might add a slew of crucial DS titles to the Nintendo Switch Online catalog.

Nintendo's patent itself is clarified as not a confirmation that a similar device will hit the shelves as companies file for patents constantly to safeguard their future products. It's clear that Nintendo is working on it somehow, but it is unclear whether it will ever become an actual item that can be purchased.

With the recent leak, fans of the console, next-generation gaming, and the highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 reportedly cannot help but be intrigued by these recent Nintendo patents and leaks.

Nintendo's Other Patents

Another recent Nintendo patent, as reported by Gamerant, filed in late 2022 and published in October of this year, states that the patent concerns a portable gaming device.

It features four renderings of the upcoming console and emphasizes several significant differences from the previous Switch.

Nintendo's recent patent shows a new handheld does not employ Joy-Cons, instead relying on a joystick to the left of the screen, four face buttons to the right, and two shoulder buttons on the top of the console.

These reports remain a shot in the dark, considering Nintendo is reportedly hard to predict, with the company loving to subvert expectations. Making a detachable 3DS-inspired gadget seems as feasible as anything else the company may bring to market.

Nintendo Switch 2 Previous Updates

Most specially with rumors that Nintendo Switch's successor is coming as early as 2024.
