A new way to log in via your Nintendo Account is here, as the company now adds Passkey support. This renowned technology uses biometrics to skip entering the password every time you need access.
The company said all its users with compatible devices can use it, particularly those that use biometric logins to their devices. Apple's iOS and Google's Android are two ways to use Passkey, and it only requires users to meet the minimum software requirements.
Nintendo Adds Passkey Support For Online Account Logins
NintendoSoup was able to fetch support documents detailing the latest integration of Passkeys to Nintendo Accounts, with the company now using this technology for authentications as an additional layer of security.
"Registering a passkey with your Nintendo Account adds a layer of security that can help prevent unauthorized access to the account. When signing in to your account, you can choose to use your passkey to sign in instead of your email address or sign-in ID and password. Your passkey is saved in advance on your smartphone or other device, and this is retrieved by accessing that device when signing in," said Nintendo.
Users can now start registering Passkeys to their Nintendo Accounts via supported devices and meet the minimum requirements:
- iPhone with iOS 16 or newer
- iPad with iPadOS 16 or newer
- Mac computer with macOS 13 or newer
- Android devices with Android OS 9 or newer
Setup Passkeys to Your Nintendo Account
A Passkey sign-in feature is already available on the Nintendo Accounts website, so users no longer have to enter their email address and password. However, the user must set it up before using biometrics to log in.
First, log in to your Nintendo Account via email and password. Head to your profile and look for "Sign-in and security." Next, look for Passkeys and register your preferred device. Users may add up to 10 Passkey devices for future logins.
Passkeys: A Passwordless Future
Passkey is not limited to Apple or Google, as it could be integrated into their technology if they adopt it, with Microsoft also joining the charge towards a passwordless future soon.
Users only need to store their passwords to the cloud in their initial login and trust these companies that offer Passkeys to hold on to this information that would be available when needed. It would use the fingerprint, retina, or face scanners for input.
That being said, those who are already a member of the FIDO Alliance have been enjoying Passkeys, with many apps receiving support to use this feature, including PayPal.
A truly passwordless future centers on no longer needing to type the password whenever logging in, and in this way, users are more protected as they do not have to input it every time they need it.
The latest joiner of the Passkeys revolution is Nintendo, recently making it available whenever logging in to the Nintendo Account required for the Switch console and other services.
