The Mate 60 Pro was recently released by Huawei as it shocked the world with its new flagship phone. With that, Foxconn, one of Apple's suppliers and assemblers which also works with other companies, is reportedly paying people more to work on Huawei products than Apple products.
Huawei Mate 60 Pro Runs on the Kirin 9000S SOC Manufactured by SMIC Using the 7nm-Class Fabrication Process
According to the story by Tom's Hardware, Huawei's new Mate 60 Pro runs on the Kirin 9000S system-on-a-chip. This chip was reportedly rumored to be manufactured by SMIC, which is based in China, using a 7nm-class fabrication process.
The article notes that smartphone now competes with Western chipmakers as well as other smartphone brands despite their disadvantages. The main disadvantage of Huawei is that it is still being sanctioned in the US, cutting its access to a major market.
Recently, as reported by the South China Morning Post, it looked as if Foxconn was paying its workers more to work on Huawei products instead of Apple products. More was being paid for workers on Huawei devices at the company's Shenzhen-based plant compared to those working on the iPhone.
Foxconn Recruiter Shares How Those Working on Huawei Devices Get Paid More than Those Working on the iPhone
A Foxconn recruiter known as Xu told Tom's Hardware that oftentimes, new hires will find out what type of phone they're working on after they are allocated to certain teams depending on the demand. However, there is a higher chance that they would be working on Huawei handsets recently.
It was noted that the manufacturing of Apple iPhones is carried out by the integrated digital product business of Foxconn, which is known as iDPBG. When it comes to Huawei, their demand is being filled under Foxconn International Holdings.
As per the SCMP report, it was revealed that FIH pays workers $3.60 hourly while iDBPG only pays workers $2.89 hourly. This meant that those working on Huawei would've earned $0.71 more compared to those working on the Apple iPhone.
Although FIH Employees Get Higher Pay, iPhone Workers Still Get Better Welfare Programs
So far, it remains unclear as to whether the difference is only because of how popular the Huawei Mate 60 Pro is in China. Xu noted that FIH employees often get higher pay but that the iPhone makers still get better welfare programs, which could suggest they getting better benefits.
As reported by Digitimes, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro just recently hit stores and the company has already had orders for 15 to 17 million units. However, it's also important to note Apple had just recently announced the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro so it just recently opened up to pre-orders meaning it could still collect a significant amount of orders in the next few months.
This comes as Apple is starting to diversify its supply chain as it is the first time that the company has had iPhones made in India launching with the ones assembled in China. The Indian iPhone factories are still reportedly owned by Foxconn.
