Chromebook to Get 8 to 10 Years of Support After Backlash on the Computers’ ‘Expiration Dates’

Yes, computers have an expiration date for when they will no longer see support.

A massive development for Chromebooks has been revealed by Google, and the company now claims that there would be as much as eight to ten years of support coming for the computers. This is after Google received massive backlash from customers, advocacy groups, and schools who use the Chromebook, claiming that its system has 'expiration dates.'

While it is normal for other computers and technology to have expiration dates as they push for upgrading to the latest devices, some, including companies or educational institutions use these for a long time.

Google has announced via its blog post that Chromebooks are now eligible to get as much as eight to ten years of support from the company, offering massive coverage to its users.

Chromebooks released from 2019 and up, it is set to get eight years of support, while those that were released from 2021 onwards will see as much as ten years of automatic updates.

The Mountain View giant claimed that this program will start in 2024, with Google also partnering with component manufacturers to test the software for compatibility.

Alongside this, users should expect a regular update every four weeks which centers on safety and security to help enhance its stability and features.

Google Chromebooks' Notorious Expiration Dates

Ars Technica reported that many have been complaining about Google's Chromebooks, especially since the company had set expiration dates for the computers to use for a certain period only.

That changes now, and Google said that even after the ten years of automatic updates, there is a feature called Verified Boot which would ensure a fix for the computer's problems even after the support.

Google and the Chromebook Devices

Microsoft has Windows, Apple has macOS, and Google joined the computer OS developments in 2011 when it introduced the first edition of Chromebooks which were made with Acer and Samsung. This focused on the Chrome OS, the renowned free and open-access operating system from the company that is meant to revolutionize the computer industry.

One of the most notable features of Chromebooks is their price, and it is an affordable option for work and creative purposes, enough to bring what users need from the tech.

Moreover, there are rumored plans that Google is looking to develop Gaming Chromebooks soon, with the company already offering Nvidia's GeForce Now free three-month access, centering on cloud gaming.

One of the most iconic features of a Chromebook is its light and nifty experience, one that moved away from the feature-packed and heavy offers from Windows and Mac. One of the most significant challenges of owning a Chromebook is its end of support, which is fairly early for some customers, but that is no longer a problem as Google promises to extend what it has to offer.
