In a nod to New Delhi's push to adopt India's homegrown GPS alternative, Apple has added support for NavIC in select new iPhone 15 series models.
According to TechCrunch, this is the first time Apple has included support for the NavIC navigation system in any of its iPhones. However, the company has not detailed specific features included in this deployment.
In 2018, India achieved a significant milestone with the launch of the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC), demonstrating the nation's ambitious endeavor to establish an autonomous, self-reliant navigation satellite system.
Devised by India's national space agency, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), NavIC provides precise positioning and timing services over India and its adjacent territories. Through more than six satellites, NavIC's expansive coverage encompasses the entire landmass of India.
The New Apple iPhone 15 Series
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, both designed with aerospace-grade titanium for durability and lightweight properties, led Apple's latest release on Tuesday.
Noteworthy upgrades include a 48MP main camera system with a super-high-resolution 24MP default, enhanced portrait capabilities, Night mode, Smart HDR, and the introduction of a 5x Telephoto camera exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Further enhancements come in the form of a potent A17 Pro chip, promising elevated gaming experiences and professional-grade performance. The introduction of a USB‑C connector with accelerated USB 3 speeds and support for new video formats unlocks advanced pro workflows.
Moreover, the iPhone 15 Pro lineup integrates Roadside Assistance via satellite, a testament to Apple's commitment to innovative satellite infrastructure.
Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max Titanium Finishes
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be available in four distinct finishes: black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium. Pre-orders kick off on September 15, followed by general availability on September 22.
In a noteworthy departure, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max feature a titanium build, a material synonymous with spacecraft construction. This choice not only contributes to a lightweight design but also ensures durability.
The incorporation of a refined brush texture, contoured edges, and remarkably thin borders enhance the aesthetic appeal. Reinforced with the toughest back glass and Ceramic Shield technology, these models are designed for resilience.
A thermo-mechanical process bonds the titanium bands with a substructure crafted from 100 percent recycled aluminum, resulting in exceptional strength through solid-state diffusion.
This innovative construction supports thermal dissipation and facilitates easy back glass replacement. The Pro models also spotlight the Super Retina XDR display, incorporating Always-On and ProMotion technologies for an unparalleled visual experience.
"This is the most pro lineup we have ever created, with a state-of-the-art titanium design, the best iPhone camera system yet that enables game-changing new workflows, and the A17 Pro chip, which ushers in a new chapter of performance and games never before seen on iPhone," said Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of Apple's Worldwide Marketing.
"iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max represent the best of Apple design and industry-first innovations to help enrich the everyday experiences of our users, while enabling them to unleash their creativity," he added.
