A new rumor is now appearing days ahead of the September 2023 'Wonderlust' event by Cupertino, and reports are claiming that Apple is also moving away from creating silicone cases for the iPhone and Apple Watch bands. Initially, Apple was also rumored to no longer release leather cases for the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup, a decision that has yet to be confirmed.
Still, this does not mean that there would no longer be any cases coming from Apple, as the company would center on rumored "FineWoven" materials to use for its next-gen phones.
Apple's iPhone Cases: Moving Away from Silicone
MacRumors shared new information regarding Apple's plan to be more sustainable and this is by cutting down on its use of the silicone material (no, not the chips!) for the iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands. Many of Apple's accessories are made out of silicone rubber, best known for its vibrant variety of colors for different devices.
The report claimed that this rumor's source is anonymous, with the company claimed by the leaker to be gradually moving away from these silicone materials and not an imminent pullout of the accessories.
It was also rumored earlier that Apple is looking to move away from its use of leather for iPhone cases, and it would have the same reasons for the silicone discontinuation, for environmental and sustainability reasons.
'FineWoven' Cases to Arrive on 'Wonderlust'?
9to5 Mac reported that Apple is not necessarily shutting down its case production for the iPhone, but would be focusing on a material that it calls "FineWoven."
As evident in its name, this would be made of cloth, woven by its production to "imitate leather" and bring a premium iPhone case. Other sources claim that this is referred to as the "Magsafe environmental protection cloth leather cases."
Apple's Pledge to Sustainability
In the massive shift to focus on a more eco-friendly and sustainable approach towards different aspects among tech companies, Apple is one to pledge a significant move for the environment in 2021. This is known as the Apple Plan for 2030, with the company detailing their set goals to observe within his decade, and soon go carbon-neutral by 2030.
Earlier this year, Apple revealed that it is focusing on using recycled materials to use for its batteries meant for different technologies, initially coming by 2025.
The renowned Apple Park in California has also increased its renewable energy usage with its new solar roofs, increasing as much as 30 percent for their clean power use.
However, Apple is not only relying on changing this in their technological developments but also for their existing accessories, one that started with the iPhone's leather case. Now, it adds another accessory to remove from its production to adhere to its sustainability plans, with iPhone case and Apple Watch bands made with silicone soon to be replaced with FineWoven materials.
