Sony Reveals Release Date for PlayStation Portal, Its Gaming Handheld Take for the PS5

The portal to PS5 games is coming to your hands.

Sony has unveiled the official release date for its upcoming portable gaming handheld console, the PlayStation Portal, a device that was leaked to the public earlier this year. It serves as a port for PlayStation 5 games and the entire PS5 experience for gamers to take anywhere, featuring the same design scheme that is seen on the console's controller, factoring in a screen for remote gaming.

Sony unveiled via their X post that the release date for the PlayStation Portal would be on November 15, more than two months away from now. This will be the official launch of the device, and this would also be the time that users may see it drop on physical or online retail stores, as well as from Sony, featuring the unique handheld gaming console.

The PlayStation Portal is one of the most uniquely designed gaming handhelds in the market now, as most have opted for a closed design with nothing sticking out, as seen on the Switch, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and more.

Portal will bring the iconic DualSense hand grips with it while attaching to the 8-inch LCD screen, replacing the Touch Pad on the gaming controller.

The $199.99-priced gaming handheld is an affordable one, and it would not require gamers to purchase separate games for it but would depend on the installed PS5 games on their actual console.

Its function is to mainly be a remote player for the PS5, and this means that users should have both gaming devices connected over WiFi for the experience to work. The downside is, it cannot access PS Plus or PS Now games directly, and would require owning the PlayStation 5.

Sony's Gaming Consoles and Handhelds

Portable gaming consoles are the bomb in today's day and age, as they provide the console experience without the hassle of bringing the massive devices anywhere with you, one that requires direct power and a screen to hook it up to. While Sony was not quick to jump into the gaming handheld scene, it has some plans to bring back this experience with the rumored PS Vita 2.

Sony is not shy about bringing handheld gaming to the world, particularly with its first take on the iconic PlayStation Portable (PSP) which brought three generations of the handheld. There was also the PSP Go which offers a sliding screen, a prelude to modern foldable devices now, as well as the PS Vita.

Initially, the device was dubbed as "Project Q," unveiled earlier this year by the company as part of its PlayStation Showcase, alongside other features for the PS5 and the games that are also dropping with it.

Later on, Sony officially unveiled Project Q as the PlayStation Portal, which also gives the PSP vibes and has the same initials, but will feature a new experience that is familiar to the PS5. The device will soon arrive on the market by November 15, with the initial pre-orders getting the console immediately upon launch, coming in at $200, one of the cheapest handhelds in the market.
