Meet PlayStation Portal: Bringing PS5 Gaming to the Palm of Your Hand

Here's what you need to know about the upcoming portable PS gadget.

Sony will release the PlayStation Portal later this year. The widely anticipated portable gaming gadget is designed to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi, allowing players to enjoy their favorite video games from various locations within their homes.

The PlayStation Portal solves the typical issues when players share a living room TV or want to spread out their gaming venues. According to the PlayStation Blog, the gadget uses Wi-Fi to remotely connect to the PS5, allowing seamless gameplay between the handheld device and the gaming console.

PlayStation Portal Features

IGN reported that the PlayStation Portal's primary goal is to simplify Remote Play. The upcoming gaming gadget has a special function that distinguishes it from other Remote Play devices: it can wake up the PS5 by merely turning it on, assuring a ready-to-play gaming experience.

The PlayStation Portal has an eight-inch, 1080p LCD and two controller grips attached to a modified DualSense controller. The eight-inch 60Hz LCD produces fantastic images that are on par with PS5 quality in a portable device. Even though precise brightness, color gamut, and HDR criteria are not provided, the 1080p resolution ensures a reasonable pixel density for the screen size. The design may look unusual, but it offers a portable solution with a large screen and full-size controllers.

Players may completely immerse themselves in the gaming experience thanks to the PlayStation Portal's retention of all the essential characteristics of the DualSense controller. Even the touchpad is accessible, although in the shape of two touch areas at the display's bottom corners. Notably, the light bar is the sole feature absent from the DualSense controller, a minor oversight given that it plays a non-essential function in the majority of games.

How Much Will It Cost?

The PlayStation Portal includes extra features in addition to the DualSense wireless controller, such as a USB-C connector for charging, a 3.5mm headphone socket, and built-in speaker grilles for a different audio experience. The system's networking options, including Wi-Fi and PlayStation Link, increase its adaptability for mobile gaming.

According to The Verge, the anticipated PlayStation Portal will cost $199.99. It is also important to note that the device will not work with Sony's upcoming cloud streaming service for PS5 games, which requires a PS Plus Premium membership. Instead, the PS5 user's device is intended to enable remote play for already installed titles.

Sony recommends 15 Mbps for the best gaming experience. However, an internet connection with a minimum bandwidth of 5 Mbps will do.
