Anybody can be someone else online, but not Jack Dorsey, as he was the only @jack on Instagram until he recently quit the platform and deleted his account. This made his first name-only username up for grabs to the fastest and lucky user who shares the same name or nickname that immediately applied for a handle change on the platform.
Different single-name user handles are known in social media, with one of the most famous being @zuck, belonging to Mark Zuckerberg and what he uses on Instagram and Threads.
Jack Dorsey Quits Instagram
TechCrunch reported that Jack Dorsey announced his departure from Instagram via Damus, an app made by Nostr, best known for its decentralized social media experience.
Here, Dorsey claimed that he is now free of Instagram after many years of being inactive on the platform, with the renowned tech executive saying that he has since stopped using it since it was sold to Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook.
The renowned Twitter co-founder further said that he was among the first users of the original Instagram, and was part of the first ten users who made an account here. Dorsey also claimed that he was one of the first angel investors of OG Instagram.
That being said, he has not used Instagram for a long time now, and as per his claims, this was starting 2012 or more than a decade ago.
@Jack Now Available
Searching for the @jack account or directly searching the URL that directs to his account would have users seeing an error prompt that says that the page is unavailable. That being said, Dorsey is interested to see what will happen to his original account username should it be given to another user, or see an interested PR agency or representative buying it for a client.
Social Media Handles
Social media handles have been controversial for long periods, especially as not all celebrities have their name on them, and other users getting ahead of them and reserving it so that PR agencies may buy them from them. However, there are the likes of X (formerly Twitter) who take it away from users instead of buying it from them.
With the massive rebrand of X, comes the collection of its usernames to use for the company to promote themselves online. However, it was not possible as there was an original owner of the "@x" handle who had it since 2007, with Gene X. Hwang later reporting that it was also taken from him by the social media's management.
Getting one's right name and handle on Instagram or other social media is hard, as there are millions of users all around the globe, and many share the same name. For someone whose name is common like "Jack," Dorsey had the privilege to take the @jack username when he first arrived on Instagram, an exclusive perk that he gave up now after he left the platform.
