Samsung has revealed its new GDDR7, which makes it capable of being able to transmit more than the previous cap of 24 Gbps per pin. This comes as the company makes massive improvements over the previous GDDR6 RAM.
Samsung Launches a New GDDR7 RAM, Which is Capable of 32 Gbps Per Pin
According to the story by GSM Arena, this comes as the GDDR7 is capable of doing speeds up to 32 Gbps per pin, which would reach new speed heights of 1.5 Tbps. The improvements are reportedly 40% faster compared to the GDDR6, which was only capable of reaching 1.1 Tbps.
The increase in speed is possible due to the new RAM adopting a new technology, a 3-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM3). This particular technology is also being utilized in other tech parts like the USB4 and Thunderbolt 5.
The GDDR6X, which can be found in cards like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 or the later RTX 4090, also used a related standard, the PAM4 standard. Aside from being fast, the new technology also consumes less energy than its previous counterpart.
The Improvements Also Give the New RAM Advanced Thermal Resistance
Samsung was reportedly able to develop what was described as a low-operating voltage version of the newer GDDR7. This would allow this RAM to be able to utilize in different devices with power constraints, which include laptops.
The company will also be doing something that would allow it to better combat the heat with its new GDDR7 RAM devices. This includes the use of epoxy molding compound (EMC), which gives the RAM chips better resistance to heat.
The EMC reportedly encases RAM chips which give 70% lower thermal resistance compared to the EMC, which was used in the previous GDDR6 packages. This means that more heat will be whisked away faster.
Samsung VP of Memory Product Planning Team Gave a Statement Regarding the Launch of the RAM
Samsung is also going to send out samples to most of its customers sometime later this year. This comes as the company can start working on devices that equip the GDDR7 RAM on board.
As seen on the official Samsung website, Yongcheol Bae, the executive VP of the Memory Product Planning Team of the company, gave a statement regarding the GDDR7 DRAM, saying it would allow them to help elevate the user experiences in certain areas that need better graphics performance.
Despite Announcing, It Could Still be a While Before Samsung Reaches Mass Production
The different types of devices that could pack the GDDR7 DRAM could be workstations, PCs, and even game consoles. They also mentioned how the new technology would be capable of handling more demanding applications like AI, HPC, and automotive vehicles.
An article by The Verge shares how the development of the GDDR7 was an industrywide effort. Although Samsung was the first manufacturer to ever announce the new technology and how it has already completed the development of its chips, it could still be a while before it reaches mass production.
