Twitter has finally launched an ad-sharing program for its content creators, making good on a promise that owner Elon Musk first made to his users in February.
Twitter is pushing for more ads, and select content creators on the social media platform will now be able to get a share of the revenue earned from ads that appear in their reply threads.
Twitter Launches Creator Ad Sharing Program to Pay Influencers a Fraction
Twitter announced the arrival of its creator ad sharing program on Thursday.
"We're expanding our creator monetization offering to include ads revenue sharing for creators. This means that creators can get a share in ad revenue, starting in the replies to their posts. This is part of our effort to help people earn a living directly on Twitter," the social media company said via its official Twitter account.
To be eligible for ad revenue sharing, users should subscribe to Twitter Blue and have earned more than 5 million tweet impressions each month for the last three months.
Users must also pass human review for creator monetization standards and sign up for creator subscriptions, according to Twitter's Help Center. They must also have a Stripe payment account. Thus, this program is only available for countries that support Stripe payouts.
Twitter to Expand More Eligibility for Creators Ad Sharing
Aside from the requirements, users must also follow the creator subscriptions policies. There are reportedly limits to what types of creators can earn money through this program. Based on its content monetization standards, sexual content cannot be monetized.
For now, Twitter is starting with a selected number of content creators to include in this ad sharing program. On Thursday, the platform already started sending emails to select users, saying eligible creators would get their share of ad revenue in the next three days.
Twitter has promised that more eligibility is coming later this year. The company noted that a monetization tab will soon appear on the app's settings for better access.
Twitter's Monetization for Creators
Elon Musk wants Twitter creators to thrive, despite initially charging them a monthly subscription fee for the verification badge on their profiles to assure the public that it is their official account.
Creators were initially promised a chance to earn money from the ads they see on their reply threads, as Twitter brings more ads on the platform. So instead of being annoyed that there are unrelated ads to their threads, they get paid for it and earn a percentage from the platform.
Musk previously revealed that Twitter subscriptions would help maximize the creator monetization opportunities on the platform, rewarding influencers with more earnings on the premium subscription program. However, it is still unclear how Twitter calculates its payouts to creators or splits the revenue it shares with eligible users.
