Apple iOS Update Comes with AirDrop Update to Prevent Unwanted Requests

Find out how the iOS update protects users from random AirDrops.

Apple consistently comes up with new ways to improve the company's operating system, and now, a new feature enhances the security measures around AirDrop. The improvement comes by blocking unwanted requests by only allowing contacts to send requests.

iOS 16.2 Feature Allows Access to the 'Contacts Only' Settings Option

The update was reportedly released on June 5, giving users the "Contacts Only" option on Settings. This would block any AirDrop requests not directly from the user's contacts.

According to the story by Best Stocks, the feature comes after the company received backlash regarding certain restrictions which affected the user experience of AirDrop in China. This resulted in the company releasing option users can use to choose whom they receive AirDrop requests from.

AirDrop is the company's solution that allows users to share files, videos, photos, websites, locations, and more simply through Apple's integrated system. It was noted that this feature relied on WiFi and Bluetooth and was one of the fastest ways for users to send files.

The New Update Helps Stop Unwanted AirDrops

While this feature remains a useful advantage only available to iOS, it used to come with certain risks of users accidentally receiving a wrong AirDrop, resulting in unwanted files or content being sent their way.

Although Apple is known for its security regarding iOS files and downloads, there are other potential risks of receiving random files or content from strangers. Because of this, the new feature would not allow people that users don't know to find them in their options regarding who to send files to.

The two main requirements for users to use AirDrop, aside from using an iOS device, are to have an Apple ID and WiFi and Bluetooth connection. Once users have these, they can freely use AirDrop to send or receive gigabytes of content.

Activating the Feature Through Settings

To change the settings and activate Apple's new iOS 16.2 restrictions, you must first update the iOS. After updating, the new settings option will be accessible.

Go to Settings > General > AirDrop. Once done, the "Contacts Only" option appears, preventing receiving unwanted file sends when activated.

Per Tech Crunch, the newer iOS 17 update allows users to AirDrop contacts by simply bringing two iPhones together.

Disadvantages of the New Feature

The new feature is not perfect, and here are the cons. If you are trying to receive a file from someone not yet in your contacts, you must add the person to your contacts or manually deactivate the feature for some time. This brings inconveniences to those who need to download files from users within their contact list regularly.
