Google has unveiled the development of a new AI-driven function to make searching faster and easier for emails in Gmail on smartphones.
The new feature, announced in a blog post on Friday, adds a "top results" area and is designed to give mobile Gmail users a more convenient experience in finding older messages or attachments within the program.
How Does The New Gmail Feature Work?
Google's robust machine learning algorithms are used significantly in the "top results" section. The function seeks to provide users with exactly what they are looking for by using recent emails, the search keyword, and other relevant criteria.
The search results in Gmail are now shown in a specific chronological order. However, consumers may anticipate an individual section, "Top results," highlighted at the top of the search results due to the integration of artificial intelligence.
This AI component represents a considerable advancement by merging users' most recent emails and pertinent data to provide the most probable results for their search. Once consumers use this new search option, its efficacy will become clear.
The feature's deployment started on June 2, and it will take at least 15 days until it is accessible to Gmail mobile users. In a blog post, Google informed all account holders and customers of the availability of the "highly requested" function.
Google Catching Up With ChatGPT
Google has actively pushed AI developments ever since ChatGPT first appeared to realize its potential fully. This effort resulted in the creation of Google Bard, a new iteration of Google Search that created issues over its effect on websites. It led to the departure of Geoffrey Hinton, the revered "Godfather of AI," from the tech giant, allowing him to debate AI hazards publicly.
This latest action is consistent with Google's planned adjustments to its email service, including a divisive revision to the dormant account policy in May.
According to the new policy, if an account is inactive for two years, Google may erase it with all its data and content. Additionally, Google has finished revamping its Gmail user interface, emphasizing its other productivity features.
These strategic changes align with Google's most recent cost-cutting initiatives and CEO Sundar Pichai's 20% productivity growth goal.
Alphabet executives highlighted resource allocation towards AI, search, and search's potential to provide a quantifiable return on investment during the company's most recent earnings call in an unpredictable environment.
