Amazon, Canon Sue Counterfeiters of Camera Batteries, Chargers

Amazon also claimed of successfully blocking more than 99% of suspected fraudulent listings.

Counterfeit goods are a thorn in the side of many reputable companies, with their knock-off products weakening brand reputation and reducing profitability.

According to a news release from the retail giant, Amazon and Canon have teamed up to take down a group of counterfeiters allegedly selling fake Canon camera batteries and chargers on the Amazon store.

In a bold move, the companies filed a joint lawsuit against the group, accusing them of infringing Canon's registered trademarks.

Using Machine Learning to Spot Counterfeits

Working together, Amazon's Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU) and Canon Inc. used advanced machine learning techniques to confirm that the products in question were counterfeit.

Amazon then took swift action, shutting down the 29 selling accounts operated by the defendants. For Canon, a leading provider of digital imaging solutions for over eight decades, protecting its brand reputation is of utmost importance, and the company takes aggressive action to combat counterfeiting.

Both Amazon and Canon have invested heavily in advanced machine-learning techniques, greatly improving their proactive controls. These technologies have automated and broadened intellectual property protection and counterfeit detection systems.

"Machine-learning technologies really is our first layer of defense to detect counterfeit goods and also the bad actors trying to sell them," Anna Dalla Val, Amazon's director of global brand relations, told WWD.

For instance, in 2022, Amazon's automated technologies scanned over 8 billion daily attempted changes to product detail pages for signs of potential abuse. Their tools successfully blocked or removed more than 99% of suspected fraudulent listings without the brands ever having to report the abuse.

Amazon's Ongoing Battle Against Counterfeiting

Amazon's battle against counterfeit products has been an ongoing endeavor. While they have put measures in place to prevent them from infiltrating their online store, some inevitably slip through the cracks.

In April, Economic Times reported that Amazon was able to destroy 6 million fake goods from the system in 2022, along with 800,000 accounts belonging to counterfeiters.

However, Amazon does not rest on its laurels when it comes to counterfeit goods. They take feedback from customers and brands seriously, use it to enhance their systems, and work closely with law enforcement agencies worldwide to hold bad actors accountable.

In an impressive feat, Amazon's Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU) has taken legal action against more than 1,300 criminals in the past year in the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and China.

These efforts are not only a testament to Amazon's commitment to customer safety but also their dedication to protecting legitimate brands and products.

One such brand is Canon, which has enrolled in Amazon's Brand Registry and Project Zero. These brand protection tools have been instrumental in Canon's efforts to identify and eliminate counterfeit products in the Amazon store.

With the help of these tools, Amazon can prevent counterfeit products from ever reaching customers, providing peace of mind to brands and shoppers alike.
