Nintendo has announced that one billion copies of its software have been sold for the Nintendo Switch, marking a significant milestone in the company's history.
Nintendolife reports that the Switch has reached a total of 125 million copies of hardware sold as of March 2023, a slower growth rate than the previous year, but its software sales had exceeded projections.
The figure, 1,036,150,000 units to be exact, is a big success for Nintendo, and it is not surprising given that it has been predicted for some time.
The Switch has already outsold the DS in total game sales, making it Nintendo's most successful platform in terms of software. The DS, on the other hand, still holds the record for the most hardware sales.
Nintendolife also highlights that software sales have increased for popular games, including "Fire Emblem Engage," "Metroid Prime Remastered," and the remaining "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" in the most recent quarter.
The upcoming release of "Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" is expected to further boost sales in the next quarter. It will be intriguing to observe the extent of its impact on overall sales.
These updated figures are based on Nintendo's latest company financial report.
Making Sense of Nintendo's Latest Figures
According to Nintendo's financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2023, the company's revenue fell 5.5% year on year due to a drop in profit and revenue caused by reduced sales of their flagship Switch console.
Despite this reduction, Nintendo was able to sell 17.97 million copies of its flagship Nintendo Switch console series, meeting the company's own fiscal year forecast of 18 million units.
CNBC reports that Nintendo's net profit for the fiscal year exceeded the company's initial projections. Despite a loss of more than 9% year on year, the corporation declared a net profit of 432.7 billion yen.
Nintendo attributed some of the sales dips to "shortages of semiconductors and other components that impacted production until around the end of summer." Furthermore, the company did not witness the same revenue increase throughout the holiday season as the prior year.
Nintendo's CEO, Serkan Toto, stated, "The Nintendo Switch had a fantastic run but definitely passed its peak," and that "Nintendo, too, now needs a new piece of hardware to revitalize its sales."
The company anticipates software sales of 180 million units in the current fiscal year.
Mario Pulling the Strings for Nintendo
Nintendo's iconic characters continue to prove their popularity as "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" exceeds expectations at the box office, according to company President Shuntaro Furukawa.
Reuters reports that the president also mentioned that the success of the film marks a significant step in Nintendo's efforts to expand beyond its core console business.
The movie's performance highlights the enduring appeal of Nintendo's beloved characters and sets a promising precedent for future ventures in the entertainment industry.
