According to code discovered in its Android app files, Bard, Google's artificial intelligence (AI) language model, is rumored to be making its way to the Google Pixel smartphone via a widget on the home screen, TechRadar reports.
The search engine firm launched Bard in response to Microsoft's Bing Chat, with the two major tech companies engaged in an artificial intelligence (AI) search engine race.
Despite the fact that Bing Chat is presently available on PC and mobile devices, TechRadar tells us that Bard is expected to close the gap with recent updates that improve its math and coding skills.
What the Leaked Code Tells Us
Based on leaked code, first reported by 9to5Google, it appears that the Bard widget could be available either as a standalone icon or integrated into Google Search's existing widget.
It remains unclear what services this widget will offer, but it could provide Pixel smartphone users more accessible access to Google's AI capabilities.
While there is no certainty that the Google Bard widget will be released in the near future, the upcoming Google I/O 2023 event may shed more light on this leaked development.
What We Already Know
Pixel Superfans reportedly received invitations for early access to Bard in late March, an AI chatbot, under the Trusted Tester program.
The invitation reads: "Meet Bard, an early experiment by Google that lets you collaborate with generative AI. We'd like to offer you - a member of our Pixel Superfan community - early access so you can get started as soon as Bard launches and share your feedback."
The firm also noted that it is excited to see how people will use Bard but acknowledges that large language models may not always be accurate. Thus, input from experts and users is crucial to improving Bard.
More Things to Note
TechRadar says that Bard, Google's new virtual assistant, will be available exclusively on Pixel smartphones. This includes the upcoming Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and the recently announced Pixel Fold.
This move is consistent with Google's previous approach of reserving certain services for its devices, a strategy it previously employed with Google Stadia, which is now virtually defunct.
However, this approach may pose some challenges for the tech giant as it may restrict Bard's audience and hinder its reach to a broader market.
Back in February, Google reported significant losses, specifically a $100 billion loss in market value, when Bard was discovered to have generated false information in an official Google advertisement.
However, integrating Bard into the home screen widget of the Google Pixel smartphone would enable users to access its features with a few taps. This would make it simpler for Pixel users to utilize Bard's features, eliminating the need to activate a separate app or navigate multiple menus.
