MG's Hi-Tech SUV Models Recalled Over Fire Hazard, 5000 Vehicles Affected

The brand has been gaining popularity in Australia in the past few years.

MG, a Chinese automobile brand, has recalled almost 5,000 of its high-tech SUV models in Australia due to fire concerns.

The recall affects 5,168 plug-in hybrid MG HS PHEV and MG HS+ EV SUVs sold between February 1, 2021, and March 21, 2023.

News.com.au tells us that the recall was issued after it was revealed that incorrectly placed carpets could cause a fire hazard.

Reason Behind the Fire Hazard

The recall bulletin tells us that a manufacturing flaw resulted in the carpet underlay being positioned between the nut and the electrical ground stud, which, over time, due to vibrations when driving, might cause the wiring beneath the floor to overheat, potentially resulting in a fire within the vehicle.

According to MG, no incidents or injuries caused by the problem have been documented in the affected vehicles delivered in Australia.

The firm has stated that it has begun contacting impacted vehicle owners to arrange for inspections and repairs, which would be delivered at no cost to the client if necessary. This recall does not affect the electric MG ZS EV model.

MG prioritizes safety, and as such, the firm has taken this precautionary measure to safeguard the safety of its customers.

According to an MG Motor Australia spokeswoman, the action is a precautionary measure demonstrating the company's dedication to putting its customers' safety first.

The MG Brand's Rising Popularity in Australia

Data from Carsguide.com.au tells us that MG placed eighth, selling 49,582 vehicles and grabbing 4.9 percent of the Australian market in 2022, leaving Subaru, Isuzu Ute, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen in the dust by a wide margin.

The next automaker it would like to surpass is Ford, which now controls 6.2 percent of the Australian market after selling 66,628 units this year, the vast majority of which were its smash-hit Ranger truck.

MG has risen from obscurity to one of Australia's most popular brands, outselling significant manufacturers like Nissan, Subaru, and Honda this year.
