Lotus Eletre's autonomous feature could become better than the Tesla FSD, as claimed by the British car manufacturer.
As of writing, Tesla EVs (especially the Tesla Model Y) are considered to have the best autonomous system in the market.
Of course, many automakers are challenging Tesla's FSD (Full Self-Driving). These include General Motors and Ford. Now, another competitor wants to beat the Tesla FSD. This is the British automaker Lotus Cars.
Lotus Eletre's Autonomous Feature Could Be Better Than Tesla FSD
According to Inside EVs' latest report, Lotus Cars claimed that its autonomous system for the Lotus Eletre would be better than the Tesla FSD.
The carmaker said that its autonomous technology will be able to achieve Level 4 autonomy; the autonomy level referred to as "mind-off."
Lotus' robotics division CEO, Li Bo, said that he prefers a "hands-off" approach, meaning they want their EVs to operate without any intervention from human drivers.
As of writing, the Lotus Eletre was already tested; numerous tests showed that the electric SUV could drive over 120 miles in mixed conditions without any help from drivers.
Lotus Cars aim to increase this range to over 62,000 miles per human intervention. But how can Lotus Cars achieve this?
Key to Level 4 Autonomy
Lotus Cars believe that the key to achieving Level 4 autonomy is the integration of LiDAR sensors.
Many tech enthusiasts claim that LiDAR is the most promising sensor-based tech for autonomous car applications. They added that LiDAR is considered to be the building block for self-driving. However, Tesla opposes this idea.
In 2021, Tesla announced that it would remove LiDAR sensors in its EVs to reduce costs. The EV maker decided to rely on cameras instead of radar for its driver assistance.
Aside from this, MakeUseOf reported that Tesla also wants to reduce the complexity of its FSD by taking out LiDAR sensors.
