Elon Musk promised that Tesla's full autonomy would happen this 2023.
If you are a fan of the billionaire, then you already know that he always makes this promise every year.
Initially, Elon said that every EV he sold since 2016 would have complete autonomy capability, allowing them to drive themselves safer than humans.
He said this would happen through software updates provided by Tesla in the future. He even claimed that his Tesla EVs would achieve Level 5 SAE autonomy, allowing drivers to sleep during road trips.
Musk made another promise, claiming that Tesla's full autonomy would happen in 2023.
Tesla Full Autonomy 2023
According to Electrek's latest report, Elon Musk made another promise: Tesla's full autonomy will arrive in 2023.
The tech executive shared this in their Tesla Q1 2023 financial results. He said that FSD beta users could see pretty dramatic improvements.
"There'll be a little bit of two steps forward, one step back between releases for those trying the beta," said the billionaire.
He added that the EV trend they see is clearly towards full-self driving and autonomy. "And I hesitate to say this, but I think we'll do it this year," added Musk.
However, whether he refers to Level 4 or Level 5 autonomy is unclear. He only talks about the FSD beta driving system being safer and better based on his statements.
If you are a Tesla EV owner, the best thing you can do is wait for Elon's further announcements.
Autonomy Levels
There are six autonomy levels in cars. These include the following:
- Level 0: The car has no driving automation capability.
- Level 1: The car has driver assistance; still requires the attention of the driver.
- Level 2: The car has partial driving automation; it can perform steering and acceleration by itself.
- Level 3: The car has conditional driving automation; it can detect obstacles and perform driving tasks.
- Level 4: The car has high driving automation; it can perform driving tasks under specific circumstances.
- Level 5: The car has full driving automation; it can perform all driving tasks without the need for the driver's attention or interaction.
As of press time, The Drive reported that Tesla's autonomy is still at Level 2. This means the EV maker must still go through Level 3 before achieving Levels 4 and 5.
