Canadian organizations tend to fall short when it comes to AI adoption compared to their US-based counterparts, a new survey from KPMG says.
While the country is showing signs of life when it comes to ChatGPT experimentation, it does not take the fact that it's at a competitive disadvantage if we are talking about AI development.
Canadian Firms Recorded Low AI Adoption Rate
KPMG Canada has found out in its new research that over one-third of Canadian companies are experimenting with ChatGPT, but the overall AI adoption in the country remains low.
The team conducted the study between Feb. 21 and 26, 2023, where 250 firms (those with $500 million revenue or higher) participated. Out of these numbers, 160 came from the US, while 90 organizations were from Canada.
The survey has revealed an interesting insight that Canadian organizations (35%) are continuously exploring the use of AI, but this is still lower compared to the percentage of US companies who are doing the same thing (72%).
ChatGPT, the most popular AI platform which set the world abuzz, has become the loudest news in town for several weeks now. It's so controversial that even professionals think that there's a great way to use and abuse it.
Speaking of this AI chatbot, 37% of Canadian companies are discovered to be testing the grounds with ChatGPT. Again, this number is considered lower as US firms accounted for 65%.
AI Boosts Productivity in Workplace
As Global News.ca reports, companies are becoming more competitive with AI. Several industries, such as healthcare and finance, are taking advantage of this trending software.
The news site adds that organizations tend to use AI platforms to improve the productivity and efficiency of the work during operational hours.
Somewhat, using ChatGPT has become more common to the point that nearly 43% of employees are turning to it for work-related tasks, Fishbowl concludes via Tech Times' report.
Going back to the Canadian organizations, KPMG finished surveying the participating companies and witnessed that over 40% of them use AI in call centers.
"Canadian organizations are trailing behind their U.S. counterparts when it comes to AI adoption, and it comes at a time when developments in the space are moving fast - particularly in generative AI," KPMG Canada's advisory services managing partner Benjie Thomas said.

Generative AI Can be a Double-Edged Sword
The power of ChatGPT and other generative AIs such as Bard and TruthGPT is evidently impactful if used correctly. As such, KPMG says that businesses can achieve success and become more competitive if they utilize it responsibly.
However, not all reports about AI are good news. There have been previous reports that AI can be disruptive to the point that it makes students lazier in doing their homework.
It even came to the point that some experts opposed the idea of using it, citing that it can do more harm than good to society and the community.
Industry leaders are keen on implementing its widespread use to the public, suggesting that regulation for AI technology should be made first.
