Twitter is now marking Substack links as unsafe.
The social media company did this just days after the newsletter platform introduced its Notes feature. For those who don't know what Notes is, it is a Twitter-like enhancement that lets users publish small posts.
Many tech experts compared Substack's Notes to Twitter's tweets because it also has a dedicated tab for each post. Now, it seems like Twitter is not happy with the new feature of Substack.
Twitter Marks Substack Links as Unsafe
According to The Verge's latest report, Twitter now marks Substack links as unsafe.
Whenever Twitter users click on a Substack link included in a tweet, they will receive a separate warning notice.
"The link you are trying to access has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially spammy or unsafe, in accordance with Twitter's URL policy," said the social media giant.
Twitter also provided the violation categories that Substack links are falling into. These include the following:
- Spammy links mislead people or disrupt their experience.
- Violent or misleading content could lead to real-world harm.
- Malicious links could steal personal information or harm electronic devices.
Are Substack links on Twitter really unsafe?
The Verge team said that they had already checked many Substack links on Twitter. Based on their observation, these URLs are perfectly safe to access.
Because of this, many tech enthusiasts are criticizing the action of Twitter against Substack.
Some of them even describe the latest activity as a "hostile movement." Marking Substack links as unsafe is not the only thing Twitter is implementing.
TechCrunch recently reported that Twitter restricts users from including Substack links on their retweets and tweets. Twitter posts with Substack links also can't receive likes or comments.
