The American computer storage firm announced the cybersecurity hack on Monday, April 3. Western Digital confirmed that they had a security incident on March 26.

The tech firm added that the unauthorized third party accessed some of their systems. Western Digital decided to permanently close its services and systems as part of its safety measures.

However, it's been days since the security incident, and users can't still access their My Cloud data.

Apple Insider's latest report states that Western Digital's My Cloud is still down. Aside from this, other services remain inaccessible.

The down WD services include the following:

  • My Cloud Home
  • My Cloud Home Duo
  • My Cloud OS 5
  • SanDisk ibi
  • SanDisk Ixpand Wireless Charger

"As part of its remediation efforts, Western Digital is actively working to restore impacted infrastructure and services," said Western Data.

The storage service provider added that their latest investigation shows that the security breach probably gained access to their client's data.

Information affected by the hack includes some personal data of their employees, as well as warranty registration-related info.

"IP theft is unfortunately common in this industry, and Western Digital is a leader in the field and has a lot of data attractive to competitors," stated CYE Vice President via SDX Central.

What can Western Digital consumers do?

The most important thing that Western Digital consumers/clients do is to back up their sensitive data. However, since the My Cloud service of the tech company is still down, backing up their information is impossible.

As of writing, the computer storage service provider hasn't announced when their platform will go back online. Since the security breach is a serious one, there's a chance the downtime could last for weeks or months.

As cybercrimes become rampant, other organizations and companies fall victim to security breaches.

Recently, experts claimed that understaffed U.S.-based rural hospitals are becoming targets of ransomware attacks. We also reported about the fake "ChatGPT for Google" Chrome extension, which can steal Facebook accounts.
