Deep within Moscow lies a dark secret that's waiting to be unveiled. The scary cyber warfare that Russia has been doing for ages, has been discovered in a secret "Vulkan" file, the investigative report says
Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin knows how to shock the world with its cybercrime tactics.
In a 5,000-page document containing thousands of emails and files, an anonymous person exposed how the country bolsters its hacking tactics by spreading disinformation on the internet.
Vulkan Files Leak Tells More About Russian's Sinister Cybercrime Strategies
The Guardian details in its report that Russia is more than just a controversial nation plagued with notorious security issues known to mankind.
There's more to discovering how the country operates underground by deploying hacking and disinformation tools everywhere. The report notes that an angered employee from Vulkan has disclosed the cyberwarfare capabilities of Putin's army of hackers.
It was stated there that the whistleblower publicized the leaked Vulkan files to inform the people how dangerous Russia is.
The previous scenario in Ukraine only proved that Russia is not just all about guns and tanks. It can also wipe out an entire country's data by manipulating the database.
"Because of the events in Ukraine, I decided to make this information public. The company is doing bad things, and the Russian government is cowardly and wrong," the unknown source says.
The anonymous source adds that they are angry about the Ukraine invasion and all of the other terrible things taking place there.
Additionally, the source has shared the information in an investigative report by Paper Trail Media, a Munich-based startup.
According to Euractiv, the content of the secret Vulkan document is currently being analyzed by over 50 journalists across eight countries. Some of them are from Le Monde, The Washington Post, and The Guardian.
Notorious Sandworm Hacking Incident
Russia's military and intelligence division is notorious for supplying important tools for Sandworm, a popular crew of hackers in the region.
According to Interesting Engineering, the widespread Ukraine hack is all attributed to Sandworm, not to mention the power outages in the neighboring nation.
The same group was reportedly responsible for the deployment of NotPeta, a dangerous strand of malware which is deemed to be the "most destructive malware" in history.
Although there's no strong evidence that Russia was linked to Sandworm, the leaked files noted that Vulkan was paid for this kind of illicit activity.
The Vulkan document does not only cover recent events. Its content spans from 2016 to 2021. It's a highly-confidential file that contains financial records, internal negotiations, technical specifications, contracts, and more details about Moscow.
By providing a software that Russia needs for file exploitation, NTC Vulkan is also held responsible in conniving with Russia.
The social media manipulation is falling in place for Moscow, as the documents suggest. According to Mandiant's VP of intelligence analysis John Hultquist, it's on the same page with the attacks that Russia did to attack "civilian critical infrastructure."
For security reasons, the unidentified source told The Guardian that they need to disappear "like a ghost" very soon. It's possible that someone knows their whereabouts and they only fear getting caught by Putin's men.
