Previous attempts at bringing The Fantastic Four to the big screen were less than successful. It seemed like Fox just couldn't get a handle on what it wanted the movies to be, and ever since, the Fantastic Four has been one of the few examples of a bad Marvel movie.
The first Fantastic Four was a misguided, mediocre film, while Rise of the Silver Surfer was an absolute mess. Now, years later, Fox is trying again - and this time, it actually looks like the film has a chance at being decent:
"THE FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy." (Via Screenrant)
First and foremost, if there's any one big letdown about the trailer, there's no real look at the Thing. Sure, there's that final reverse shot, but it's not what anyone would call a detailed reveal. There's probably a lot of CG work left to finish, but anyone who's excited for this movie wants to get a good look at ol' Ben Grimm. Anything is better than the jumpsuit made of Cheetohs from the last film, but fans are still pretty anxious about what the character will look like.
The rest actually looks pretty great. The first Fantastic Four movies felt like they were trying to ape the comic books of the '60s at time, but this new trailer never dips into campy territory. People may scoff at the fact that the film is yet another origin story, but at least this new Fantastic Four looks like it'll have some atmosphere.
Of course, it's far too early to make any judgement on the film, but going by the first trailer alone, The Fantastic Four is off to a good start. Fox has an uphill battle ahead of them (especially since Marvel reportedly cancelled the comic book to hurt the movie), and with any luck, the final product will match the first trailer in terms of quality.
The Fantastic Four opens on Aug. 7.
