Microsoft's HoloLens will soon have a new x-ray capability.
This innovation will allow people to see hidden objects using the HoloLens AR gadget. Thanks to the collaboration between Microsoft and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), users can soon try the new X-AR feature.
"Our whole goal with this project was to build an augmented reality system that allows you to see things that are invisible," said the senior author of the X-AR research, Prof. Fadel Adib via MIT's official report.
Microsoft HoloLens to Have X-Ray Vision Capability!
According to CNET's latest report, the X-AR is a system built as an add-on to Microsoft HoloLens.
This means that consumers can use it together with the HoloLens gadget; serving as a "sixth sense" of the AR wearable. It is powered by a flexible antenna, which can locate specific objects that are outside people's line of sight.
However, these objects need to be marked with a radio frequency identification tag and should be less than 15 feet away from the HoloLens user.
MIT researchers created their own HoloLens application for the X-AR HoloLens add-on. This advanced app directs the HoloLens wearer toward the object they want to locate.
Aside from this, the app also informs them if they picked up the correct object using the HoloLens built-in hand-tracking features.
X-AR Applications
MIT experts said that the new X-AR technology could be applied in warehouses, shipping, retail, and other similar places that have RFID tags.
They added that X-AR can also be used to other more complicated tasks, such as identifying food that are safe to eat.
Aside from this, the X-AR add-on can also assist rescue efforts when it comes to finding victims of disasters. If you want to learn more about the new X-AR technology for Microsoft's HoloLens, you can click here.
