Ghost of Tsushima, a PlayStation game, has been selected for a film adaptation, and John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been attached to helm the project. Stahelski has recently said in an interview that the game's "really interesting" plot and fantastic aesthetics suggest it might make an excellent movie.
When asked how he plans to use what he picked up from John Wick in the cinematic adaptation of developer Sucker Punch Productions' upcoming 2020 video game, Stahelski told IGN that technology may end up playing the most significant role.
"With every John Wick, we try to build the world a little bit bigger with the characters and set pieces and lighting," the director said. "Just what we've learned over the past couple years with DI, digital intermediate - the coloring at the end [of production] - and what you can do with new technology and with new Alexa cameras, that's kind of allowed us, hopefully, to take cinematography to the level that Ghost deserves," he added.
'Push the Color Palette'
Among Ghost of Tsushima's many strengths, many gamers praise its cinematic presentation, as revealed by The Escapist. Although this is an action game, it is the stunning island that players will be exploring that serves as its primary selling point.
Thanks to his work on John Wick: Chapter 4, Stahelski has plenty of expertise in generating visually striking works, and that island, in particular, is overflowing with vivid hues.
Stahelski is thinking about ways to expand the color pallet in the Ghost of Tsushima film, among other things. In a report by GameSpot, he posed the question, "How can you bring that world to life in a very realistic and grounded way?"
Stahelski described that in John Wick: Chapter 4, people can see the pinks and purples. The production team boosted the color and highlights as far as they could go, as explained by Stahelski. A lot of work went into the technology behind the vibrant colors and consistent projection you see in the cinemas.
The 'Kurosawa Mode'
Ghost of Tsushima's Kurosawa Mode is perhaps the game's most innovative element and the other side of the game's creative coin. The mode simply adds a black-and-white filter so that players may experience the game as if they were watching an old Akira Kurosawa film.
The Ghost of Tsushima movie likely will not be shot in black and white, but director Chad Stahelski is not ruling out using Kurosawa Mode in any capacity, saying, "It's definitely a conversation."
Considering that there is still no set release date for the film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, audiences will have to wait a little longer. Meanwhile, John Wick: Chapter 4 opens in cinemas today. It is unclear at this time whether Chapter 5 will be written.
Apart from overseeing the Ghost of Tsushima film, Stahelski is set to direct a film adaptation of the Rainbow Six series, which will star Michael B. Jordan.
