Someone from Twitter has discovered that GPT-4 can actually simulate a game in a text-based interface.
Dan Dangond managed to turn "Pokemon Emerald" into an entire text game while preserving the original nature and elements of the Gen 3 mainline title.
Text-Style 'Pokemon Emerald' Running in GPT-4
Dangond, a Senior Innovation Engineer from PTC Reality Lab has finally concluded that GPT-4, the latest ChatGPT-like tool can run a game into a text-based interaction.
On Twitter, he mentioned Bulbapedia for becoming the fact-checker for this experiment. It turns out that the AI software is capable of reading the code of one of the most popular Game Boy Advance games: "Pokemon Emerald."
To see if it's really working, Dangond uploaded every screenshot containing his conversation with GPT-4. It appears to be something that's played on a Notepad minus the visuals and sounds.
It's interesting to see that the AI tool can launch a command-line interface in some usual in-game tasks such as choosing a starter Pokemon, setting your game clock, and more.
"You start your journey in Littleroot Town. Professor Bitch is being chased by a wild Poochyena. He calls for your help and asks you to choose one of the three Pokemon from his bag to help fend off the Poochyena," the AI told Dangond.
After that, you will be asked to select one among Treecko, Torchi, and Mudkip to be your companion throughout the whole story.
GPT-4 writes a very detailed response to the point that you are playing "Pokemon Emerald" on paper. The correct description of levels, move sets, and rewards is all over the place.

GPT-4 Errs Some Parts of 'Pokemon Emerald' AI Simulation
According to a report by Polygon, while Dangond successfully tested GPT-4 to run "Pokemon Emerald" in text-based style, it still has many flaws that every player should take note of.
For instance, it does not take into account that Nincada is 2x weak to water because of its bug/ground typing.
Aside from that, there are also miscalculations in the accuracy of attacks. Rock Tomb seems to miss very often and some battles and beats are getting skipped, as well.
Another thing is, the AI has inaccurate reading on the map after it suggests no reason why Route 110 is inaccessible. It also provides an incorrect path to get there.
While you can actually go to this location, you need to get HM Surf to reach this destination. You can't easily cross the waters by not going to Slateport first.
GPT-4 might be a better version of ChatGPT, but it does not mean that it's already a know-it-all tool that everyone should use.
It will take some time before we come up with an AI that can interact like a real human. For now, we can fix the wrong information that it provides by devising a new question.
