The evening of February 17th marked the dawn of a new era for AI. Partygoers danced to AI-generated beats in the East London nightclub The Glove That Fits in a unique experiment.
The Future of Nightlife: Algorhythm and the Rise of AI-Generated Music
According to the story by Channel News Asia, the " Algorhythm " event sought to test whether an app could match the vibe of real-life records and mixers and provide the excitement of a normal club setting.
Algorhythm, hosted at the Glove That Fits bar in East London, was recently billed as one of the first of its kind. As attendees danced to artificial intelligence (AI)-generated beats, it became clear that AI has come a long way from its beginnings and is indeed becoming a disruptor to existing industries.
The Experience of an AI-Generated Beat: A Night of Dancing at the Club
Powering the music on this night was Mubert, an AI-driven app that creates brand-new tracks using human-made loops and samples, allowing the creators of these samples to get a cut of any music generated.
The DJ booth, usually filled by a human, was left empty this night in an experiment to see if people would embrace an AI-generated beat, as noted in an article by Reuters. After a few hours of dancing, the verdict was a resounding yes.
Paul Zgordan's View on Realizing Mubert's Ambitions to Match the Complexity of Text AI
Rose Cuthbertson, a 24-year-old AI master's student, felt the sound could use a bit more complexity and various electronic genres. At the same time, fellow partygoer Pietro Capece Galeota declared the job well done, as also shared in an article by Dimsum Daily.
Yet Mubert's CEO, Paul Zgordan, still sees an uneven journey ahead if its ambitions to match the complexity of something like ChatGPT are to be realized. He believes music is much more complex than text and "for now, technology is not ready."
Embracing AI in the Music Industry: Algorhythm Showing Promise for Musicians
This is no surprise given the state of AI, but Zgordan believes it's much more than just a challenging task - he's determined to use AI to create jobs for musicians and provide them with the opportunity to earn money with the help of AI.
Despite its limitations, Algorhythm definitely showed promise for AI within the music industry, proving that people are ready to embrace it - as long as it doesn't truly wreck the vibe.

AI Technology Disrupting the Traditional DJ Performance Scene
Certainly, it will be interesting to see how much further Mubert can go and how Zgordan's ambitions are fulfilled. It may be a while before robots are fully-fledged DJs, but it's already clear that they have begun to step up in the music scene.
Once the traditional DJ booth was populated by the throngs of a live performance, Mubert demonstrated that the new generations of DJs would be less visible yet just as thrilling.
Algorhythm showed that AI music could take real-world performance's energy and create something new and exciting prospect in itself. Whether AI will overtake the traditional DJ remains to be seen, but it is clear that it will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of music.
