The developer behind the smash hit mobile games "Alto's Adventure" and "Alto's Odyssey," Snowman, has revealed that it is creating a new game exclusively for the streaming service Netflix.
Engadget reports that the studio has promised that the new game entitled "Laya's Horizon is an entirely new IP that they have been working on for quite some time, but details on the gameplay and release date remain limited. Netflix Games will publish the game.
What to Expect
The announcement of Laya's Horizon has piqued a lot of anticipation among Snowman's fanbase because of the developer's reputation for creating games with engaging and exciting mechanics.
The game's brief trailer shows a picturesque island landscape with windmills, hot air balloons, and towering cliffs. The scene then pulls back to reveal what appears to be the playable protagonist, a person wearing a cape or glider standing atop the landscape.
Based on the brief trailer, the next game will be another exciting title, but this time with a lot of flying and gliding and some crashing too.
Even though the trailer reveals little about the gameplay, it is evident that Laya's Horizon will be another visually spectacular game from Snowman.
The game's tagline, "A whole new world is just beyond the horizon..." also implies that players will be able to explore a vast and engaging game world.
Next Big Game?
"Alto's Adventure" and "Alto's Odyssey," Snowman's previous games, have been critically acclaimed and hugely successful. Alto's Adventure has received over 50 million unique downloads in the Google Play Store to date.
The games were also renowned for their great graphics, simple yet addictive gameplay, and calming soundtracks. TIME named Alto's Adventure one of the "Best Looking Video Games of 2015" in 2015.
It remains to be seen whether Laya's Horizon will be as successful as its predecessors, but its sneak peeks suggest that Snowman has another hit on its hands.
Netflix's Foray Into Gaming
It is worth noting that Laya's Horizon is now part of Netflix's atypical foray into mobile gaming.
Back in August 2022, Netflix was found to be planning to incorporate cloud gaming into its featured services based on discovered job listings at the time.
At the time, Netflix's games had been downloaded 23 million times and had over 1.7 million daily users. That number is 1 percent of the streaming platform's 221 million subscribers.
According to Engadget, the streaming giant has already released over 40 Android and iOS games that are all free to download and play for subscribers, with no ads or microtransactions.
The games have proven popular among subscribers amid a slow start, and Netflix has promised to continue investing in this new gaming venture.
Netflix has always had high hopes for its gaming service. In 2021, IGN reported that the company aimed to create "the absolute best gaming experience in the business."
