Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 teardrop hinge has reportedly begun its final testing, according to a new report from a South Korean media outfit.
The giant phone maker is expected to debut its next-generation Android foldable in the second half of 2023. However, Samsung has yet to disclose what consumers could expect from it.
Yet, early reports are now giving us a glimpse of what to expect. And that includes the rumored new hinge of the upcoming mobile device.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Teardrop Hinge
As per a recent report by GSM Arena, the South Korean news outlet, The Elec, claims that Samsung is now working on a new hinge for its next-generation foldable. The phone maker has reportedly kicked off the final testing of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 hinge.
Early rumors say that the successor of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which debuted last August, is getting a massive upgrade. It could potentially sport a new teardrop hinge.
Essentially, the design that Samsung is reportedly working on should help make the phone thinner than ever. And on top of that, the folding display of the device should also lessen its visible crease.
GSM Arena notes in the same report that the Korean tech juggernaut showcased the hinge design during the CES 2023 last January. Right off the bat, it makes the device a few millimeters thinner. From the current 15.8mm thickness, the new design is only 14mm.
New Foldable Hinge Begins Final Testing
And this time, it looks like Samsung is now testing out the capability of its new water drop hinge.
The Verge reports that the Galaxy phone maker is now testing the durability and overall reliability of the new hinge design, which potentially graces the Galaxy Z Fold 5
Based on Samsung's CES 2023 showcase, the new hinge is set to make its upcoming foldable phones look more seamless. But is it more durable?
No Longer Lifespan?
The Elec reveals in its report that the new hinge has already significantly lost its strength after 300,000. In fact, the hinge only retained 85% of its overall strength after 200,000 folds. So going over that might make the phone a bit wonky.
The Verge notes that 200,000 folds roughly occur after 5 years of normal average use, wherein users open their phones 100 times a day.
On the other hand, current foldable offerings, including the new Oppo Find N2, go twice that limit, at least according to the claims of the Chinese phone maker. Oppo says that the Find N2 could take around 400,000 folds.
