A Tesla Mexico-based factory is expected to be constructed, thanks to a successful call between Elon Musk and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
For the past few months, many critics speculated that Tesla will soon start a gigafactory project in Mexico.
These rumors appeared in 2022 after the Tesla CEO announced that they will construct a new facility in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Last October 2022, these speculations became more serious after Elon decided to meet with the Mexican governor.
Now, it seems like the recent rumors about a Mexico-based Tesla factory are true.
Tesla Mexico-Based Factory Expected to Arrive
According to Teslarati's latest report, a call between Elon and Obrador hints that there would be a new Mexico-based Tesla factory.
Officials said that their talk went really well. One of them even noted that the billionaire and the Mexican leader were 90% towards closing an agreement.
Mexican officials described the calls between the Tesla CEO and Lopez Obrador as extensive talks; one call lasted for 35 minutes, while the other one (Feb. 27) lasted more than 40 minutes.
As of writing, the exact details of their talks are expected to be announced in the following days.
Details of Tesla Mexico Factory
Electrek reported that Nuevo Leon, a state controlled by the Mexican government's opposition, is already out of options.
Lopez Obrador explained that Tesla could be denied a permit to construct a facility in Nuevo Leon if water is insufficient in the region. Instead, the Mexican president wants Tesla to build its new facility clear to Mexico City in a new business hub.
All these details were confirmed ahead of the upcoming Tesla Investory Day 2023. But, it is unclear if the new Mexico-based Tesla facility will be included as one of the announcements in the event.
