Twitter Will Now Notify Users if They Do This One Thing Regarding Community Notes

The community note aims to enhance user awareness of the tweet that they interacted with.

According to a recent announcement from Twitter, users will soon receive an alert when a tweet they replied to or retweeted receives a "community note." This new function aims to encourage healthy conversations and reduce harmful content on the platform.

As reported first by TechCrunch, Twitter's "community notes" are a type of feedback the company provides to users when their tweets are reported for violating the platform's policies.

Community Notes

A staff of reviewers on Twitter examines reported tweets to ascertain whether they are in violation of Twitter's policies. A community message will be sent to the user who posted the tweet informing them of the infringement and outlining the steps they can take to make things right.

The notification will let the user know that the tweet they engaged with has been reported for breaking Twitter's rules and will prompt them to review the tweet and decide whether to keep their engagement with it.

Twitter hopes to enhance user awareness of the content they engage with through the use of this tool and halt the spread of harmful content on its network.

"Community Notes aim to create a better informed world by empowering people on Twitter to collaboratively add context to potentially misleading Tweets," the company wrote in a blog post.

"Contributors can leave notes on any Tweet and if enough contributors from different points of view rate that note as helpful, the note will be publicly shown on a Tweet."

For US-based users, the program was first released in 2021 under the name "Birdwatch." Elon Musk eventually changed the program's name to "Community Notes" after his takeover.

Twitter began displaying Community Notes to all users worldwide in December. In addition to the US, the company started accepting notes from contributors in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand in January.

Enhancing Content Control

This function is a part of Twitter's ongoing initiatives to enhance content control on the platform. The business has previously been under fire for how it handles offensive content, such as hate speech, harassment, and false information.

Twitter has made several adjustments in recent years to address these problems, including implementing new policies, enhancing its reporting system, and expanding its staff of content reviewers.

However, some of these efforts were reversed when Elon Musk bought the company and became the new Chief Twit in 2022. He has fired several employees, including those who are in charge of content moderation and the platform recently halted its COVID-19 misinformation policy.
