Elon Musk, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Tesla, donated billions worth of shares of his electric vehicle (EV) maker to charity last year.
According to a recent United States Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, the billionaire entrepreneur has given away roughly $2 billion worth of Tesla shares in 2022.
The SEC document further disclosed the dealings of Musk involving Tesla shares last year.
Elon Musk's Tesla Shares Donation in 2022
As per a recent report by Reuters, the shares that Musk donated last year are nearly $2 billion, or roughly $1.95 billion, to be more exact.
It turns out that the Tesla CEO donated a huge bulk of shares of the all-electric carmaker from August to December 2022.
The SEC filing confirms that the tech entrepreneur has given away around 11.6 million shares to an unnamed charity in the said period.
Although the recent filing discloses the amount that Musk donated, it failed to mention which charity or organization received the nearly $2 billion worth of donation.
BBC reports that the filing aptly describes the donation last year as "a bona fide gift."
The giant EV maker, as well as its chief exec, has yet to comment on the billions worth of donations made in the previous year.
However, BBC notes in its report that Musk spoke about plans to donate millions of dollars in 2022. In his tweet last March 30, he announced that he is "donating $20 [million] to Cameron County schools."
On top of that, he also stated that he plans to donate another $10 million for the "downtown revitalization" of the "City of Brownsville. But it is unclear if the SEC filing includes these two beneficiaries.
Previous Tesla Stock Donations
It is worth noting that this is not the first instance that Musk donated to charity. In fact, the billionaire has given away more to charity in 2021, according to a separate SEC filing.
In 2021, he donated Tesla shares to the tune of $5.74 billion. So this goes to show that his donation last year was significantly lower.
Besides donating Tesla shares, Reuters highlights in its report that Musk took part in the Giving Pledge in 2012. And since then, he has committed to offering half of his riches to philanthropy.
Other signatories include Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, according to The Giving Pledge website.
Apart from leading Tesla and SpaceX, Musk recently took over the giant social network Twitter. He now sits as the "Chief Twit" of the latter.
